Place for Homework?

DD is in 1st grade and doesn't have much homework at night, but enough that I want her to sit and concentrate. Our house is like a zoo at night when I get home with the 2 boys running around and me quickly trying to make dinner. I am afraid that if I have her do her homework in her room, I won't be watching over her and she won't concentrate.
How do you balance the two?

Re: Place for Homework?

DD does her homework at the kitchen table when DS goes to bed. This way the house is relatively quiet, dinner is over.

When she is older and gets more homework, we'll have her start earlier.

We do HW after school, after they change and have a snack. At the kitchen table. Sometimes the baby is napping, other times he's in the kitchen with us in the high chair or he's in the living room in his exersaucer. It can be hairy at times, but there is no play or any gaming until HW is done, so it's not usually too long.

This is exactly what we do. Except we don't have a baby, so I set my 3 yr old up with something to do so she leaves my older one alone to do the HW.

They have to do their homework in the after school program (if they're in one) or for the middle schooler the minute they get home.

If their homework isn't done - with the exception of reading - by the time they get home, they lose their iPod for the day.

Re: Place for Homework?

They sit at the dining room table and I check on them while I'm making dinner. If DH is home he'll sit with them.

DD runs on the playground for about 15-20 mins with a classmate. We come home, change and I give her a snack. She sits at the dining room table next to our kitchen. DD#2 plays in another room or in the kitchen - and I can sit with DD#1 and help her or cook dinner if I want.

Re: Place for Homework?

I make DD do her homework at the kitchen table when she gets home from school. If I wait too long, she looses her concentration so I let her get it done while shes still in "school mode"

DS is in Kindergarten, but, when we get back from getting DD at school and get her washed and settled, I have DS sit at the kitchen table and do homework.
I sit with him and can see into the den where DD is playing.
I try and get it all done before dinner.

DS has a desk in his room where we sit and do HW. We help him and DD colors.
