Re: Plainview/Syosset/Woodbury Area.. thoughts?
All three towns have great schools.
From personal experience, I say live where you can be comfortable. You don't want to have to stress about being able to afford to give your children everything else that the other kids in the neighborhood have.
We moved two years ago from a nice, middle class town, to a town that has a lot of wealthy people. I am not happy. I regret it every day.

Stick with Plainview- bigger home and probably friendlier neighbors. Your hubby has been drinking the Kool Aid ..lol..If you pick Syosset, chances are your kids are going to feel like shit when they don't get a Beemer on their 16th birthday like the majority of their snobby uppity classmates..

Re: Plainview/Syosset/Woodbury Area.. thoughts?
The difference in schools is very negligble compared to the price of the housing between the districts.
If you are looking in Plainview, look at Old Bethage. OB shares the Plainview SD and I prefer OB over Plainview as it's more secluded.
I also think OB houses hold their value better than Plainview, but that's just my opinion.

Re: Plainview/Syosset/Woodbury Area.. thoughts?
Are you familiar with any of these areas, beyond reputation?
If not, I would take time to familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods, schools, train lines, local amentities and stores, parks, etc. before making a decision. Knowledge is power when you are buying a home. One person's idea of what is a "large home" or a "great school" or a "snobby area" can differ greatly from another person's. It's all subjective.
I would also take a look at what your money can buy in different areas you are considering. But do more than look online, because online listings can only show you so much. Go and actually see some homes, so you can judge the size of the houses, the layout, the locations/areas in person.
Once you do all of these things, you will have a better idea of where you want to be. There are always tradeoffs in buying a house, no matter what your budget is. So you may decide being in a certain area is worth having a smaller house, or you may decide that you want a house of a certain size and condition that will eliminate certain areas for you given budget constraints. There's no right or wrong answer... only you and your DH can decide what's best for you and your famil, and what will make you both happiest.
As long as you make the decision based on your own research and perceptions, you can't go wrong!

Re: Plainview/Syosset/Woodbury Area.. thoughts?
Just keep in mind the taxes are REALLY high.
We rented in Plainview for years before bought. The taxes on the rental house were $26,000 a year.
The house had been re-done in the early 90's and still carried the heafty tax. It was the "nicest" house in the neighb, but so run down. They WANTED 900/1mm for the house and will be LUCKY if they sold it for 750.
So its a 750 house with 26 taxes.
Just be aware.
I loved Plainview, by the way.

Great advice everyone! Thank you.
I am very curious to know why you regret it. If you don't mind sharing what is going on that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Re: Plainview/Syosset/Woodbury Area.. thoughts?
Woodbury and jericho are certainly more wealthy. Dh really wanted Syosset bc we have family there. There was just something about syosset I wasn't crazy about. In the 500k range I felt like I was still in queens.
We ended up buying in the plainview school district (OB) taxes are upward of 12k here for small property. But We just love the neighborhood. We are really happy here, it's so quiet and feels suburban.
Dh and I are toying w the Idea of moving to Suffolk because we want a bigger house, and bigger property. We can't pay $1mm for a house though.
Just a side note,We had to completely renovate our house. We still need a new oil burner/ tank , roof and siding so these costs plus what we already paid .
It really depends on your price range

I am in Bethpage.. and I would say that its a great neighborhood and one of the top rated school districts.. It is just as good as Plainview and Woodbury but more bang for your buck! I would recommend looking there as well:)

Agreed. There is industry in Bethpage and they taxes are lower than Plainview. I'm on the Plainview border in Bethpage. I like our town very much and the schools are very good. It's also very convenient to rail and shopping. Nice community.

i really agree with this as I have heard similar stories...and its harder when you have kids there is a lot of competition unfortunately

I agree with both posters. I grew up in bethpage and it was a great community with great schools. We wanted to buy in bethpage but fell in love with a house in Hicksville, Bethpage border. If you are set on those towns you listed, I'd def go with plainview.

Re: Plainview/Syosset/Woodbury Area.. thoughts?
I LOVE Syosset - we only didn't buy there because of our commutes (me into the city, DH to 5 Towns). There is an adorable town (which is completely lacking in Plainview), the district is diverse and fantastic and there is a good sized section of middle class homes so it's not like you're getting the ONE house that is within your budget.
JMO but I'm not a fan of Plainview - I actually feel there is more keeping up with the Joneses there than Syosset.
With Woodbury, I agree with you that I would not want to be the poorest family in town so that would be out for me.
