Planting seeds for preschoolers. Which flower grows fast?
I volunteered to do a planting activity for DS's preschool class. I bought little flowerpots. I just need to buy soil and seeds. I have never planted anything in my life. I'm so clueless.
Can someone help? Which flower grows pretty fast?

Re: Planting seeds for preschoolers. Which flower grows fast?
I would say that within about 5-7 days most flower seeds will be germinating and sprouting little seedlings. If you look at the backs of the packs of seeds it will tell you how many days it takes to germinate. Some take longer then others. I've always given my student a choice of a few kinds of seeds. Sunflower seeds sprout pretty quickly and pretty big and tall, so that might be a good place to start.
One tip however, and I was a teacher for 8 years, but certainly not an expert gardener --- I've never planted flower seeds and had them actually produce a flower that we could plant outside. It always got to the point of seedling but never got flowers --- it always died off before that point. And I've tried a TON of different varieties.
However the past 2 springs I have planted string bean plants, transfered them to my outside garden, and had them produce string beans all summer long. Would you consider planting a vegetable plant such as string beans instead of flowers so the kids can see it actually produce something?
Maybe some people on the home board could offer advice in starting flowers from seed!

They always do grass seed in my kids school. It grows super fast and then the kids can draw faces on the pots and the grass looks like hair. Its really cute

This is a great project. My DS did it last year in preschool. You can even have them save their milk cartons from lunch. Wash them out and cover them with construction paper instead of buying pots.
