Planting Sites
Ok,I think I might have already mentioned that I have a black thumb
We just had our stoop and walkway done, and now we need to fill in our front beds. We get full southern exposure. Anyone know any sites that will tell me what is good to plant there (bushes and flowers)? I want to kind of figure it out before we go to the nursery.
Thanks!

Re: Planting Sites
hi lisa, you can try posting a pic of the area you want to plant on the gardenweb forums. Some of the people there are really knowledgeable & they know what plants work in specific zones.

Re: Planting Sites
Since you don't have much of a green thumb, I would suggest planting Hostas. They come up every year and just get fuller and fuller. They require little maintenance and come in a variety of colors. You can always supplement the front with annual like Marigolds or Gerainums.

Re: Planting Sites
I'd be more inclined to go to a local nrsery for advice. Thats what I've been doing - they're more familiar with the environment on LI - maybe it doesn't matter, but it works for me... I highly recommend Atlantic Nursery in Freeport

Re: Planting Sites
This is our first year in our house. I have just started working on my garden and I haven't killed anything yet. I also have full sun exposure.
I have been getting a lot of advise from my mom and MIL- both of whom are avid gardens. If someone in your family gardens, definately use that resource. And talking to your local nursery (as previously stated) is also a good idea. They will be able to suggest what grows well in your area.
As for a plant suggestion- One of the plants that I love are daylilies. They love sun, and they come back every year (perenial). Once they fill in, they will also keep the weeds from coming up because they will fill the area in. They come in a wide range of colors- but you'll see alot of yellow in the local nurseries. (Stella D'ora is one variety.) I planted purple and pink ones. Make sure you ask if the plant is a "repeat bloomer." They will flower from summer to fall, depending on the variety.
If you plant perenials, they will (most likely) come back every year. Annuals only last the season that they are planted (although there are some that "self seed" and will come back year after year.)
HTH and good luck.

Re: Planting Sites
How much sun do you have? And for how long?
My backyard has very little sun and for a very short amount of time.
Hostas are great for shade.
When going to the nurseries, read the labels about sun requirement.

Re: Planting Sites
So glad this was posted. I'm here getting some good info and feeling like I have a little non-green-thumb support group. My first summer i the house and my gardening experiments are already pretty hilarious!!!

This is in my front yard, the beds right against the house. It basically gets sun all day.
I wanted to try to figure out what to plant before we go to buy it, so we could kind of map it out...

Re: Planting Sites
You could do your research online.
I personally like dwarf shrubs, perannuals, etc.. low to no maintenance.
