Playa del Carmen
We dodged Dean and had an amazing vacation. I would highly recommend the area and the resort we stayed at. It is called the Royal Playa del Carmen. It is part of the Real Resorts. There a few in Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
Our suite was amazing -- so close to the beautiful beach and the pools. You can actually choose your room from the website 48 hours before you check in! The Caribbean Sea was awesome and nice and calm. The resort has cabanas that can shade you on the beach and plenty of lounge chairs around the beach and pool.
The staff was so helpful and attentive and the food was outstanding. This was the first all-inclusive we have been to and were thoroughly impressed! If anyone is thinking about the Caribbean, I highly recommend this resort! I'll post a link to their website...

Re: Playa del Carmen
Oh we are going to that area at the end of October (Paradisus Riviera Cancun). How was the beach after the storm? Did they have a lot of damage? I'm glad you had a great time and it didn't ruin your trip!!!

Re: Playa del Carmen
Believe it or not... NO DAMAGE! The resort put up cabanas everyday we were there, and we figured out that they took them down for the storm (just to be safe), but really didn't need to.
As for price... unbelievably reasonable. for 6 nights, including nonstop airfare from JFK, about $2500. (It was hot... August in Mexico... but still worth it!) We spent more than that on a cruise to Bermuda last year, on an old ship, from NY (no airfare). This was 100x better than the cruise!

Wow!! That is great to hear that there is no damage! And that is a great price. We are going for 10 nights and paying around $3600 total which I thought was pretty good too. I guess if you risk going during hurrican season they do give you a break Oh and we bought the hurricane insurance just in case!!
