Playing God?
I was listening to the Z morning zoo the other day while driving to work. they were talking about some kind of a procedure that guarantees the sex of your baby by 99%
they split the X or Y chromosomes in a lab so you get to choose the sex of your baby.
so the question is, would you ever do it?

never ever would I do that. that's what I said too... until a few women called in to say they had done it because they had 3 boys and were dying for a girl, or vice versa.
after hearing some of their stories and how happy they are now, I couldn't help but think that would be ok.
I personally could never do it though. I think

Re: Playing God?
there are reasons that i wouldnt do it (mainly being that i'm NOT god, and dont feel its my place to play the role, but that's not something i would get into now)...
My Biggest concern is WHAT could happen down the line. I mean, most people wouldn't volunteer to try an experimental medication on themselves, because there's so much that's unknown about the outcomes, Yet, they would risk the lifelong health of their child for such a Superficial reason (IMO). A child that could have been a Healthy girl, could possibly have long term health/sexuality effects because the parents 'preferred' a boy? it just doesnt make sense to me.
Who knows what the consequences of this gene splitting could be? Its so new, and while the child may come as the sex that the couple wanted, who's to say that there wont be complications and side effects of this down the line? So unfair to take that chance with a child's life

I guess for me it's just one of those things, like abortion. I could personally never do it myself, but live and let...

i agree in that sense. My personal/religious beliefs are my own, and i would never push them on anyone else.... so i tried to refrain from that, and just focus on teh scientific aspect that really leaves alot to be answered.
still... to each his own. But, i could never find the value in that risk.

As I said in another post, we may have preferences and I think that is human, but I would never actually use science to satisfy a preference on this level.

Re: Playing God?
More than anything I would love to have a . However, if I am fated to only have s then that's what it will be. I won't resort to any medical procedures.
**I was listening to that too. Did you hear the guy that said if you BD on day 15 you will have a boy? What happens if you O on day 8 or on day 19?

Re: Playing God?
I don't think I could do it... And honestly, I'd be worried about so many cultures that place so much emphasis on one sex or the other...
I'm really on the fence with this one... i would like to say it's a personal choice... but i just worry about the slippery-slope consequences.
I guess before I could really make a decision on how i felt I'd have to learn more about it...
It wasn't something I could do myself.

I wouldn't do it because I wouldn't like feeling like I was playing G-d. I think either sex is a blessing so why bother? I didn't even think about the risks mentioned above- good point.

Re: Playing God?
I would not do it.
But, there are other methods that say determine the s e x. Like positions (didn't get a chance to try that...we were going to do it for fun) and the Ferber method, which is a little more scientific with when you are ovulationg and when you BD and stuff...I don't know exactly.

Re: Playing God?
I consider myself a religous person but when it comes to determining the sex of the baby,I'm pretty sure God doesn't have much to do with it- its pure Biology. Its either XY or XX. When someone says "let God pick" I picture him in heaven with a notebook saying "who's next? The Smiths. hmmm for them!"
I would do it, my DH would never allow it.

Re: Playing God?
NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER...
If I am blessed with a healthy baby...the sex of him/her does not matter and I wouldn't want to choose what to have. I would be MORE THAN THRILLED/BLESSED/GRATEFUL for either one.

I consider myself to be a spiritual person. I believe that before we are born, God has ordained our lives and has chosen whether he will bless us with a or or or etc....
But, I think science is really trying to come up with answers that are not meant for humans to figure out. Some things should just be left a mystery to the blessings of the good Lord above. JMHO

Re: Playing God?
I would consider doing it. Let's say if I had 5 girls and really wanted a boy.
Its something like 90% effective if you want a boy and slightly lower if you want a girl.
I dont see anything wrong with it personally.
