PLEASE - someone help us - LONG - but HELP! (link to great article in my last post)

emma has been through he&l and back....stomach virus this week, blood taken at the allergist today....

this morning - she woke up and was SCREAMING bloody murder - like we were stabbing her in her sleep. she was 'awake' but didn't really seem THERE - if you know what i mean...her eyes were shut and she was screaming. it took a good 10 minutes of consoling her to get her to open her eyes, realize we were there and get a bottle in her mouth (we didn't know if she was STARVING)...within 5 minutes - she was out cold, back to sleep. we thought she had a nightmare...

it just happened again. i'm in tears. she was asleep in her carseat - (dave & I carpooled today - so i went to his job after work and me & emmy hung out) - on the way home - she fell asleep. at his job - she was 100% content - happy, smiling, everyone was saying how happy a baby she is...

not even 2 hours later - she woke up SCREAMING - worse this time - her eyes were both open & closed....she would freak out if she saw dave or i. she'd put her head down on my shoulder and nuzzle into me - but if she saw my face - she'd SCREAM. we wanted her to see something familiar - so we got out her favorite toys (the one ball that stopped her screaming when she was having blood taken)...and she screamed louder. we turn on the tv to nick jr and she sees ni hao and calms down a small bit. ni hao ends, and i lay down with her and watch moose (she LOVES moose). she's fine - seems alert - isn't smiling (as usual) - but is awake and watching. i smile up at her (she was laying on my chest) - and she screams again....dave kept saying it's like she's awake, but not really...

it took a good 20 minutes to get her to calm down and get her diaper changed and get the cream on her eczema....

it took everything in me not to FREAK out bad and break down - because i know she needs me to be calm....but now that she's calm down i'm crying silently...

what on earth is going on????????? has ANYONE had this experience before?????????

this happened with eddie a few times when he as a baby, the ped said it was one of two things....night terrors or not properly transitioning through phases of sleep, either way, it explained the screaming and appearing to be awake, but not really.

You shouldnt stimulate her at all, or call her name, or try to wake her. Its best to just sit it out with her in a dark room and she will work through it. Its really scary, I know, but it really harmless.

definately sounds like night terrors to me...
i've had that with my DS, where like he is a lunatic and doesn't seem to understand I'm there to comfort him....it's like the high beams are on, but no one is driving, KWIM?

He was inconsolable..but eventually it dies down.

it's a stage but can come and go.

she probably doesn't even remember it afterChat Icon

I agree with PPs, it sounds like night terrors. It's tough because they're inconsolable when this happens. It happened to DS a few times, but he eventually stopped having them Chat Icon

Awwww jess!!!!!! You didn't "give" them to her!!!!!!!!!!! You are her joy and her comfort, she knows that, this is just a phase!!!
I know you're reacting to the cumulative stress of the past few weeks, and seeing your baby upset so it's ok to relieve the pressure!!!Chat Icon

Aww yes I'm sure that was scary! Plus after the past few days... :(

Tommy has woken up screaming from sleeping a few times and wouldn't calm down for a few minutes like he normally does - and had this shaky / scared cry - I'm wondering if it is the same sorta thing and like someone above said, just a phase?

It's hard for us as parents though, when all we want to do is make them feel better!

i can't believe how similar they are...she fell asleep in my arms and now i was finally just able to get her down on the boppy lounger. i spent a good hour crying while holding her and with dave telling me how insane i am for thinking it's my fault....i can't help but feel it...

So you can't even pick them up and hold them? I always go to her and pick her up, but then after a while it ends up waking her up. Sometimes, she does go right back to sleep. I just have a hard time letting her scream like that (I'm sure we all do), it just kills!Chat Icon

Morgan has been doing this too!!! I had no idea it was night terrors. I had no idea what was going on and why she was so upset.

I didn't realize she could get terrors at 8 months old! Poor babies!!!

Re: PLEASE - someone help us - LONG - but HELP!

Poor babyChat Icon Ronan also had this a few times. Once on Tamiflu(I discontinued it after because I didn't even think he had the flu) He cried this strange cry and I went into his room, picked him up, wouldn't calm down-took him out changed his diaper and took his temp before he came out of it-took about 10 minutes!

I researched it a little and read that vivid images can also give them these sorts of things so at night-not sure if you do TV or not but keep everything really soothing. I always show my kids Baby Einsteins Lullaby DVD before bed. Good luck-like others said it won't harm her.Chat Icon

No no, you can hold them, just dont try to wake them, or call their name, I was told they are already in an in between state and it just further confuses the brain and its something else for it to try to take in at the moment. OF COURSE, hold them and comfort them.

Re: PLEASE - someone help us - LONG - but HELP!

okay, well, after some major crying by me last night (once i managed to transfer her from my arms to the boppy lounger), i did some reading.

from what all of you amazing women said, it was definitely night terrors. i have had them happen to me, but i've never SEEN them happen.

that scream will stay with me the rest of my life.

the fact that it lasted almost 20 minutes will stay with me the rest of my life.

what i read said it can happen due to a baby being overtired. Emma didn't have a GOOD nap all day/night. She slept on the way to the sitter's house from the doctor - but that was only a half hour'ish & she napped at the sitter's only for maybe a half hour. That's it ALL DAY....and during the night before, she had another terror...so i'm sure her sleep was rotten the night before.

i couldn't find any information that said it can happen to babies UNDER 8 months of age - but I guess because Em's coming up to 8 months, it's considered normal. She turns 8 months on Feb. 3rd.

to all of you who posted that it's happening to you as well, thank you. you have no idea how much better i felt reading your replies.

to the women who talked me through last night - i am forever in your debt. thank you! Chat Icon
