Have you given him chicken soup? I agree infants should not be given cold medicine. Sadly, this evenings news ran a story about a 4 month old that passed away after his aunt gave him cold medicine. Can you take off of work for a few days and see if he can clear up at home? Can you take him in the shower with you so that he can have a bit of the steam clear him out and then really blow his nose?

Chat Icon such a mystery. and thank you for sharing the very sad story with me. i thought i knew that cold medicine was dangerous for babies.

Honestly a runny nose is par for the course in daycare. DD has been in daycare since she was 7 months old. She has had a runny nose from Sept-May every year. DS started daycare at 3 months old and his nose has been running ever since. As long as it is clear is really should be a big deal.

Is the mucus clear, cloudy, yellow, green or brown? I think clear is generally from teething or an allergy. Have you had him tested for environmental allergies? I think it is common for this age group to have runny noses especially in the winter time. Good luck. Don't let them bully you!

You can't give cold meds until 3 or 4 years old.

You can give allergy meds at 2, but I wouldn't give them now... I would wait until next season to see if the problem occurs again.

I don't think that there is much that you can do. Tea with honey, if he won't drink it, add apple juice. Chicken soup. Hot showers.

Bring a note from the ped. to your daycare.

I thought honey was a no no under 18 months as it can cause botulism Chat Icon

have you tried saline nasal spray? you can use this at any age (the next best thing would be a netipot, but good luck trying that in a child you DC's age!). it sounds more like an allergic issue, have you asked your ped about claritin or something along those lines? they prob won't allow it because still young though........or even benadryl at bedtime, something to dry the sinuses out............ i would speak to the ped, but try the saline drops in the meantimeChat Icon

Re: PLEASE (begging here) offer your advice or experience-toddler,CONSTANT runny nose, daycare, cold medicine!?

We were told no honey until 2
No cold meds until 3, what happens is that the cold medicine dries out the passages and in younger children it can severely damage the membranes or cause them to break

Our ped also told us to expect a runny nose and/or cold for most of the winter. It's par for the course, especially if teeth are coming in.

Tell your daycare that it's his teeth and there's no way to stop it and thats the end of it.Chat Icon

Re: PLEASE (begging here) offer your advice or experience-toddler,CONSTANT runny nose, daycare, cold medicine!?

I am upset for you. You need to bring a note from the dr & ent to daycare. I would also bring some info on the danger of cold mess in young kids and babies. They really should not be bullying you or suggesting mess, what if you didn't know better? KWIM?
Does ut seem to bother your ds at all? Have you tried saline and the bogey sucker in the am and pm. Just to clear it out? Do you have a cool mist humidifier in his room? Maybe they need one at day care too? Do any of the teachers wear perfume or scented lotion? Do you? What products do you use on ds? Has he been allergy tested for wheat, dairy? Is he drinking enough fluids?
It might very well just be from being in day care, being that age. Defin think it was from teething the last few months. Sorry they are stressing you out. Defin not right.

Re: PLEASE (begging here) offer your advice or experience-toddler,CONSTANT runny nose, daycare, cold medicine!?

I just saw on the news a baby died from cough medicine.... I would steer clear of ALL medicine like that unless your Dr. prescribes it.

DS (13mo) has been in daycare since Sept. too and that nose of his has had 1 week, I repeat, ONE WEEK where it WASN'T running!!! It's forever runny. They don't say anything to me b/c it's par for the course. All the babies have runny noses.

Just think of it this way: by the time your DC will be in kindergarten, he should be pretty healthy and not miss much school b/c his body has built immunity to a lot of stuff.

Def bring a note. The day care BTW should not be discussing your child with anyone!!! As long as you bring a note there is nothing they can do! Good Luck!

Ditto. MY DS had a runny nose from when he started daycare last february through the course of the summer. He also had constant ear infections and was teething like mad. so that all makes for a perfect storm of lots of mucus in the nose and fluid in the ears.

my dr says "no one would know my son if his nose weren't running"

her son is in daycare as well and has a runny nose ALL.THE.TIME.

if its clear, it shouldnt be a problem.

Re: PLEASE (begging here) offer your advice or experience-toddler,CONSTANT runny nose, daycare, cold medicine!?

My daughter had a runny nose from 9 months when she started daycare until 18 months when she finally got a round of antibiotics.

Is the runny nose clear? Is there a cough?

I think the daycare workers and other parents are being terribly insensitive to you if the mucous isn't colored and there is no cough. Some kids just have runny noses.

In my daughter's case, it turns out that she has a tendency towards sinus infections and I have to discuss adenoid surgery with her doctor at her 2 year checkup in January.

In any case, I have used every cold/cough/allery medicine made for toddlers and in my opinion, dimetap is the most effective.

no meds for your DS. my kids constantly have a runny nose. my DD has had a cold since she started school. she gets a cold then a cough it gets better for a week then the cycle starts all over again.

the parents in your DS' daycare are nuts....its just a runny nose/cold. your son proably has a runny nose because of their kids.

DS always gets colds with runny noses and its par for the course with day care. He gets better and then it back again the following week. I do the following though...
* put Vicks on his back and chest and soles of feet before bed. I even have Vicks at daycare and tell them to put it on his chest and back before his nap.
* He get the humidifier with the Vicks at night. It helps him breathe better.
* Simple Saline is a God send to help clear his sinus'. He hates it but understands it helps him breathe better.

Hope this helps....

MY ds has a constant runny nose- he is 14 months and pretty much had it every day since he started at 5 months

he like the calfornia baby cold and flu bubble bath - helps clear him out- it is euculyptus and helps him breath better

but you have done everything you can - my little guy is having tubes because we have so many ear infections and my daycare does not say anything about his nose unless he acts differently

most parents joke about all the kids noses and call it the day care nose

i would ignore them and definetly not give cold medicine - and maybe start looking for a new location
