So, I just got the call today that the lump I found in my breast about 3 weeks ago is cancerous.

I am a little shocked and don't even really have any questions or anything yet - even though I'm sure I probably will.

I went to the Carol Baldwin Center in Stony Brook for my mammo/sonogram/biopsy. They were wonderful. I have an appointment with Dr. O'Hea, a breast surgeon, in a few days to talk about everything. I'm sure that he will have info to share with me...but I feel like I don't even know what questions I should have...

The radiologist said that it is small (don't know the exact size) and according to the mammo and sono, it seems like this is the only spot. She said they Might recommend or do an MRI to check the whole area I guess to be sure. She said Dr. O'Hea would talk to me about that more. She said that since it is small, a lumpectomy would probably take care of it. II am a little surprised with all of this as I am on the young side (37) and have no family history of breast cancer.

Just looking for any advice I guess? It doesn't seem like it will be too big a deal? Does anyone have any experience with the Carol Baldwin Center and/or Dr. O'Hea? Treatment? Any suggestions about questions to ask? My DH mentioned getting a second opinion?? etc.

I was 33 when diagnosed in June of '13.

I am sorry, it is a bumpy road.

Dr. O'Hea is awesome!! He will explain everything and go over all treatment options. Bring someone with you because you won't remember everything he says. Hang in there. You will get through this.

Get a second opinion if you want one. I did before deciding on a surgeon and course of action. I had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation. I had an Oncotest done on my tumor after it was removed and my score indicated that I would benefit from Chemo.

There's lots of information on www.breastcancer.org and the forums there are a great source for support and information as well. Both NY Hospital's Breast Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering gave me the site as a good place to go.
