Please, could use some facts...Does it pose a risk for infants/pg women to be around someone who had the H1N1 mist?
If a child has the H1N1 mist, does it pose for infants not vaccinated, and pg women/ high risk people to be around them? Are they considered infectious? When is it safe to be around them? Please can someone give me a factual solid answer?

the mist is a "live vaccine" so i believe it is possible to catch it from some one. but i am not 100%

Here is what I know about the mist, and I believe it applies to infants and pregnant women as well, but you might want to check with a doctor to be sure.
The mist should not be used by anyone with a compromised immune system, nor should it be given to close family members of the person with the compromised immune system. We consulted an infectious disease specialist and an oncologist on this matter, and both recommended our whole family get the H1N1 shot, but in the injectable version, not in the mist. A pp is correct, there is a live, weakened form of the virus in the mist, so it's a bit risky for some individuals to get it as well as those close to them (who can pass the virus to the person with the weakened immune system).
I hope this helps!

I think this is true--I got mine at a clinic where they had both mist and shot, and when I said I had an infant at home they said I should do the shot to lessen the chance of passing on the virus.

I would think not.... sorry i dont have factual
But based on the idea that its a live 'mist' that you apply in a doctors office.. you'd inhale that mist. Unless you sneezed on someone seconds later, I would assume it is absorbed. Your nostril is moist enough to absorb it. I would think a day or so later (if even that long) it is fully absorbed into your blood stream and is no longer in your nose per se.
Sorry I can't answer with some solid facts.. ask the ped.

Re: Please, could use some facts...Does it pose a risk for infants/pg women to be around someone who had the H1N1 mist?
These are the facts from the FluMist insert:
From what I can conclude form reading this, the chances of contracting the flu from someone who has received the FluMist vaccine 2.4%.
14.5 Transmission Study FluMist contains live attenuated influenza viruses that must infect and replicate in cells lining the nasopharynx of the recipient to induce immunity. Vaccine viruses capable of infection and replication can be cultured from nasal secretions obtained from vaccine recipients. The relationship of viral replication in a vaccine recipient and transmission of vaccine viruses to other individuals has not been established. Using the frozen formulation, a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was performed in a daycare setting in children <3 years of age to assess the transmission of vaccine viruses from a vaccinated individual to a non-vaccinated individual. A total of 197 children 8-36 months of age were randomized to receive one dose of FluMist (n=98) or placebo (n=99). Virus shedding was evaluated for 21 days by culture of nasal swab specimens. Wild-type A (H3N2) influenza virus was documented to have circulated in the community and in the study population during the trial, whereas Type A (H1N1) and Type B strains did not. At least one vaccine strain was isolated from 80% of FluMist recipients; strains were recovered from 1-21 days post vaccination (mean duration of 7.6 days ± 3.4 days). The cold-adapted (ca) and temperature-sensitive (ts) phenotypes were preserved in 135 tested of 250 strains isolated at the local laboratory. Ten influenza isolates (9 influenza A, 1 influenza B) were cultured from a total of seven placebo subjects. One placebo subject had mild symptomatic Type B virus infection confirmed as a transmitted vaccine virus by a FluMist recipient in the same playgroup. This Type B isolate retained the ca, ts, and att phenotypes of the vaccine strain, and had the same genetic sequence when compared to a Type B virus cultured from a vaccine recipient within the same playgroup. Four of the influenza Type A isolates were confirmed as wild-type A/Panama (H3N2). The remaining isolates could not be further characterized. Assuming a single transmission event (isolation of the Type B vaccine strain), the probability of a young child acquiring vaccine virus following close contact with a single FluMist vaccinee in this daycare setting was 0.58% (95% CI: 0, 1.7) based on the Reed-Frost model. With documented transmission of one Type B in one placebo subject and possible transmission of Type A viruses in four placebo subjects, the probability of acquiring a transmitted vaccine virus was estimated to be 2.4% (95% CI: 0.13, 4.6), using the Reed-Frost model.

Thanks for all the info.
So would any of you be concerned to bring your infant around anyone who had the mist recently or not?

I wouldn't be concerned, unless that person was presenting symptoms (or, I could trust that they would tell me if they had any symptoms).

there re thoughts that the LIVE vaccine has caused th vast outbreaks though out LI, I would NOT bring an infant a preggo Woman or anyone wih a compromised immune system around someoe who has had the flu mist for at least 2 weeks. Thi is what we are telling all our patients in my ER. If you sneeze or cough you can transmit the virus

spmeone posted the other day that their Ped said that since the mist has a partially live virus, and virus"s shed, it is possible to catch it...although I'm sure the risk is very low.

Ugh see again, conflicting info. Some peds say it is contagious, some say it's not?? I have looked at many internet sites and they all basically say if someone is severely compromised, like a transplant patient, etc, they are at risk but anyone else isnt at risk around someone who had the mist.
So what is the deal, how frustrating as usual.

Re: Please, could use some facts...Does it pose a risk for infants/pg women to be around someone who had the H1N1 mist?
I am pregnant and took DS to the ped to get the mist this past Monday. My ped told me that there was nothing to be concerned about. (maybe that is because I had already received my H1N1 shot a week and a half before this) In fact, DS ped is also pregnant and she is around the nurses giving out the mist to her patients.
The mist is a form of the live virus, but they have removed the part of the virus that causes the actual full blown flu.
I wouldn't be overly concerned.

And if they are exhibitign symptoms, does that mean they are contagious? I dont believe so, from what my ped said and a few sites I read said....but then other things I read conflict this.
What bothers me more is if soemone has symptoms, you reallly dont know WHAT they have (reaction, or the actual flu, or another illness, etc)>

From the CDC website http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/nasalspray_qa.htm
Can pregnant women be in contact with someone who has gotten the nasal spray vaccine (LAIV)?
Yes. A pregnant woman can be in close contact with someone who has gotten the nasal spray flu vaccine (LAIV). A pregnant woman can also administer (give) a nasal spray vaccine (LAIV). Because the viruses in the nasal spray vaccine are attenuated or weakened, vaccine viruses are unlikely to cause ny illness symptoms, even if an unvaccinated person inadvertently gets vaccine viruses in their nose. The nasal spray vaccine against seasonal influenza viruses has been used in millions of school children and healthy adults since it was licensed, and there have been no reports of pregnant women becoming ill after exposure to their vaccinated children or other family members.
While it's OK for her contacts to get the nasal spray vaccine, this vaccine should not be given to pregnant women. While LAIV is not known to be a safety risk for pregnant women, there have not been studies of LAIV among pregnant women to assess safety and effectiveness for use in this group. LAIV can be given to women after they have delivered, even if they are nursing.
Can people receiving the nasal-spray flu vaccine LAIV pass the vaccine viruses to others?
In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts occurred only rarely. The current estimated risk of getting infected with vaccine virus after close contact with a person vaccinated with the nasal-spray flu vaccine is low (0.6%-2.4%). Because the viruses are weakened, infection is unlikely to result in influenza illness symptoms since the vaccine viruses have not been shown change into typical or naturally occurring influenza viruses.

Thank you, this is a great link. Do you think this would apply to infants being around those who got the nasal mist too? I wish I could see that in writing.
Actually I just looked at the link and while it does not specifically address this...it does say that someoen working on a neonative intensive care unit can get it so I assume it's ok for infants to be around.
