Please Explain the Playtex Drop-ins to Me!

OK - so we just tried them for the first time. I thought the liner would be more expanded in the bottle and then sort of collapse as he drank it. Also, maybe because it's a bag, but I found that the measurements weren't accurate - we used a 4 oz bottle/liner - but after he finished it - I poured 4 oz from the measuring cup in and it was less than four ounces that filled the whole bottle. Am I missing something?
He didn't seem too happy - but, we also tried the medium flow nipple for the first time.

Thanks!

I just measured it in the liner against the bottle. As for the bag, you can push all the air out of it before you give the bottle, that helps it collapse as you go.

I use the drop ins and have been measuring by the bag. My friend measures in a measuring cup for liquids, mixes the powder and then pours it in the bag so there is less bubbles while shaking the bottle. I've been meaning to try this but I just keep forgetting.

I guess I'm questioning if per ounce - it's the same in a smaller bag as a regular bottle? KWIM? Like shouldn't four ounces in a measuring cup be four ounces in the drop-in liner? It's not.

Also - what's the easiest way to squeeze out the air? On their website it just looks like you're pushing up...

I always measure the water in a small measuring cup (or born-free bottle we have that we don't use), put the powder in the drop-in and then put the water in and shake it up. I don't really trust measuring in the liner... and yea it usually doesn't exactly line up in the liner to the same ounces that I just measured in the measuring cup.

After I shake up the bottle I take the cap off and let some of the bubbles go away... then just hold the bottle upright and push the liner from the bottom until the formula makes it's way to the nipple.

I do the same thing. I measure the formula using a Born Free bottle. Then I push the liner and get all the air out.

When she was teeny I was super paranoid about the measuring and did the measuring cup thing.

Then, I sorta got over it and used the bag. It wont make *that* much of a difference, but when they are super small, their tummies are more sensitive.

I do the same thing...almost. Only difference is that I don't mix the formula in the drop ins. I usually have a batch made in the fridge and then I pour that into the born free bottle first to measure.

I got the born free bottles free when I registered so I figured I'd put them to use. Chat Icon

Re: Please Explain the Playtex Drop-ins to Me!

Are you using the rolled up ones or stacked ones (forget their name)? I always used these, not the roll and they do partially collapse when they drink. But don't expect them to fully collapse. Also the measurements are slightly off, we always went by the bag in the beginning. As time goes on, that small different doesnt matter.

Re: Please Explain the Playtex Drop-ins to Me!

I found that the bags on a roll are much more accurate than the "shaped" liners.
You do have to make sure it's fully expanded though.
The other thing I learned was that every bottle measures differently. I pump into Medela bottles and the Medela bottle could say 5 ounces, the Avent bottle would show less than 5 ounces and the Playtex liner would show a bit more than 5 ounces.
I don't think it really matters that much, as long as you have a pretty good idea of how much the baby is drinking.

Same here! I got a really nice gift set of born free bottles and DD wanted nothing to do with them. They are my little measuring cups now. Chat Icon

Oh yea and that makes sense to make a big batch for the day... DD is still BF and supplemented with formula (only 1-2 bottles/day) so we don't make it in advance.
