Please help - looking for traditional Thanksgiving recipes for my first official T-Day!
So since we are expecting our first child in the spring, DH and I figured this would be our last chance to really host Thanksgiving - meaning cook the whole meal ourselves.
But I've never cooked these things before!!! Please please help - can anyone give me recipes for:
- sweet potatoes with marshmallows
- creamed spinach
- mashed potatoes (um, yes, I've never made these from scratch before)
Anything else?
We're hispanic, so we'll be accompanying the turkey with spanish rice in addition to the above, and for dessert I'm making a homemade flan from scratch and picking up a Costco pumkin pie.
Does that sound like a good mix of food? Is there anything I'm missing or should add? TIA for any help!!!

We're doing thanksgiving too!
I can get my mom's sweet potato & marshmallow recipe for you if you want...
We're making green bean casserole, baked macaroni & cheese, stuffing and sweet potatoes with marshmallows. I have recipes for those if you want too....
I have a good buttermilk mashed potato recipe if you want... it's super easy! I had never made them before either until a few weeks ago!
How many people are you having? I'd probably add more dessert! And are you doing any apps?
Also... you know my DH is Spanish and they usually serve turkey, ham, spanish rice, potato salad, garden salad... I can ask him what else too if you want!

I was hoping you'd respond!
Um, yeah I totally forgot about appetizers. What kind of appetizers for T-day?????
We're going to have Pernil (pork) too, but being prego, I can't really stand the smell of it so my MIL is going to make a small one since DH and them love it. And my mom says she's not coming if she can't bring something, so I told her to make the small potato salad.
So I guess I AM having help in the cooking department But the rest is going to be on me and DH.
Ok yes, green salad, good idea. We're having 9 or 10 people.
Please give me whatever recipes you have and are willing to share!

Ideas I have... it's the step by step instructions I need I always watch the food network and never seem to get the actual recipes down. I need to just see it on paper, you know? So I can do it at my own pace.

It's good....
I like to watch them make it - and then you read the recipe online and you can remember the different steps from what they did... and this way you see what things are supposed to look like - KWIM?

I am drooling over here! My stepmom makes an awesome Pernil.

Re: Please help - looking for traditional Thanksgiving recipes for my first official T-Day!
I got this creamed spinach recipe from "mom2nico" a long time ago and use it ALLLL the time and made it for thanksgiving last year.
5 Tbls. butter OR margarine - divided 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1 dash ground nutmeg 1 cup half and half cream 4 oz. cream cheese - low-fat okay 1 sm. onion - minced 3 cloves garlic - minced (2) 10 oz. pkgs. frozen chopped spinach - thawed 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
-In a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat, melt 3 Tbls. butter; stir in flour, salt, pepper, and nutmeg; slowly whisk in cream; stir in cream cheese. -Increase heat to medium; whisk mixture constantly until thick and smooth; remove from heat and set aside. -In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook onions and garlic in remaining 2 Tbls. butter until transparent; stir spinach and water into pan. -Reduce heat to medium-low; cover; simmer, stirring occasionally, for 8 minutes. -Stir spinach mixture into creamy mixture; return to medium heat; heat, stirring often, until warmed throughout. -Remove from heat; fold in Parmesan.
--------------------------------
As far as mashed potatoes, I take russet potatoes.....peel, wash them, then boil them, once softened I put in my kitchenaid mixer with butter and milk.......that's it

I got all my recipes for thanksgiving side dishes and desserts from the food network site. Its pretty easy, and you can create an account and then print the recipes out, and also it helps to read the reviews, alot of times there are great tips people write in the reviews to help make the recipe better

Re: Please help - looking for traditional Thanksgiving recipes for my first official T-Day!
Mashed Potatoes
10 medium potatoes
garlic salt
1 - 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
1 cup sour cream
chives
paprika
butter
Cook, drain and mash potatoes. DO NOT ADD ANY MILK WHEN MASHING POTATOES or they will get runny. In a large bowl, whip softened cream cheese and sour cream together until blended. Add mashed potatoes gradually to cheese mixture. Add garlic salt to taste and small amount of butter. Pour into greased casserole. Brush top with butter, sprinkle with paprika and chives. Bake 350 degrees for 30 min.
These can be made the day ahead and refrigerated. Add more time for baking.
