Please help - what can this be?? (warning, graphic pic)

Over the past 2 hours, Lilly has developed a huge red bruise-y looking under her spay incision.

Could she be bleeding from the inside? Is this bruising normal to show up 2 days after the fact???? Should we call the e-vet???

I don't think that can be good V, I'd call the e-vet ASAP as it looks like an infection to me.

If I remember correctly, Misty did the same thing a couple days after her spay...but I'm neurotic and called the Emergency Vet - they looked at her and said it was nothing which made me feel better......Chat Icon

Soooo, if it were me - I'd call just to be sure or at the very least call your regular vet and leave a message.

Re: Please help - what can this be?? (warning, graphic pic)

Ok - I just called my vet (they have 24 hour coverage there) and they said that it sounds like just a contusion and to monitor it for any unusual swelling.

I love how I come here first before actually calling the veterinary professional Chat Icon

It does look like a bruise. My girl dog developed something similar but buldging, called a seroma.

I would still take her to the vet asap to have them look at it. I did that and it eased my mind.

ALWAYS call the vet or doctor first in any medical situation>

Based on the photo the dog may have licked the incision

were you given an e collar?

if so put it on the dog to prevent further irritation>
if you notice leakage or bleeding< swelling take the dog to the vet

Thanks - she did not lick the incision. She has been wearing an e-collar since she came home and has not been out of our sight for a second. I called the vet and they said it was most likely a bruise and to monitor it for any change.

It's gotten lighter since last night.

Has she been jumping? I know this was a concern with my Chinese Crested when she was fixed. They have very similar skin on their stomachs.

That is good, as long as no bleeding or leakage she will be fine.

Chip had something similar- it turned purple and began to swell within a week after the surgery. I took him in and the vet gave him a cortison shot and meds and it looks alot better now. but he continues to rub it on the floor and lick it so i think it's getting infected again. Chips' lookeed alot worse, if it gets worse bring her in.

Update?

The bright red color has faded A LOT and she doesn't seem to be in any pain in that area. I took her e-collar off for some good snuggle time last night and she didn't even make a move towards that area Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm pretty sure it was just residual bruising from the surgery.

However, she is not eating right yet and threw up some mucous/water this morning (see my thread on refusing food) Chat Icon

I just want her back to how she was before the surgery. I know it's going to take time, but I'm impatienttttttttttt!!! Chat Icon

Thanks again, ladies!

I just saw this - Poor baby! Abby had some swelling around the incision - we brought her to the vet and they said it was normal. I guess these weird things occur after surgery.
