Please help. 3 week old baby won't poop

Hi mommies. I really hope you can help me - I am at my wits end. My son - who will be 3 weeks old on Monday - hasn't had a poopy diaper in about 2 days now, will be 3 tomorrow. Is that normal? The poor baby grunts, and groans, pulls up his little legs and cries, but nothing. He was originally just breastfed but this last week I had to add formula (with Iron) per the doctor to help break down some of the bilirubin ( he was a little yellow after birth). Can that be causing him to back up his system? Anything I can do?? Please help. I feel so bad for him!!!! Thank you!

Re: Please help. 3 week old baby won't poop

Try an ounce of water or so or put the thermometer in his/her butt. That always did the trick for DD.

The iron is probably backing him up.
Did you try putting a thermometer in his tush with some vaseline to loosen it up. If not try it and see what happens. Also try some oatmeal or apples.

Call the ped tomorrow. Apparently some babies can go up to three days. Did you try to put the thermometer is the hiney a little? That stimulates the rectum but not far in.....

I think the iron might have done it but I'm no expert.

Re: Please help. 3 week old baby won't poop

We had the same problem with DS. He was BF for first couple of weeks then I had to add formula, and now at 10 weeks he is on just formula.
It a long story, but first he had terrible diarreaha then he was really constipated.
I would definitly talk to the dr. but we put 2 tablespoons of prue juice into 2 of his bottles a day & it really has helped. There were a couple times where he hadn't gone for a couple days & we had to give him a suppository.

Id rather give him the prune juice but if he hasnt gone in a couple days he may be very uncomfortable & the suppository works pretty much immediatelyChat Icon

Re: Please help. 3 week old baby won't poop

Call the ped. It probably is the formula but the ped will tell you how you can help him along safely.

Don't feel bad they get calls at all hours and I'm sure they will be happy to talk to you.

...and have extra outfits and the bath ready because when he does go it might be a blow out. Something similar happened with DD when she was a bit older and man once she got going I was amazed by how much came out.

You can do a couple of things...put a little vaseline on a thermometer and stick it up his butt or buy the suppositories and stick 1/2 of one up there (they always worked like a charm on DS when he was that little).

Re: Please help. 3 week old baby won't poop

Dh and I had to do this to DD every other day when she was an infant. We called it AOA (Anal Orifice Assistance).

We got baby suppositories and never left them up her tush but did what the other mommies posted about the thermometer. It always worked for us.

(My sister taught us how to do that, she had to do it to all 4 of her kids)

DD had the same problem and still does at 6 months. Ped. always told us to use the thermometer a few times to stimulate her. You can use either vaseline or KY Jelly they told us. It would either work right away or a little while later. HTH!

Re: Please help. 3 week old baby won't poop

I called the ped because that would happen to Cailen - they assured me its normal for newborns, and to give an ounce of warm water... the vaseline worked well too - even without the thermometer - I would just smush it in there! Chat Icon

Re: Please help. 3 week old baby won't poop

It's normal for my son unfortunately. You can try the thermometer and / or a glycerine suppository. Mention it to your ped at the next appt as well, they can do a rectal to ensure that there are no other problems (Hershbergers, etc).

You can try rectal stimulation with a thermometer -- but i wouldn't panic until it's been at least 3 days. give him one more day.......

then call the ped.

is his belly hard to the touch? sensitive? these might be reasons to call sooner.

HTH

In addition to the thermometer trick ... what type of formula is it? When we switched to formula, ALL of them backed my DD up until we found Nestle's Good Start. Try thermometer first but if it's still a problem, perhaps talk to your ped about switching formulas?

Re: Please help. 3 week old baby won't poop

I had the same problem with DD. The ped made us give her bottles of water between feedings. It didn't really seem to help. They also had us give her prune juice just to start things moving. It was 1 oz of prune juice and 2 oz of water in her bottle. That really helped. Finally though we did have to change her formula. Similac Sensitive seems to be working really well. She goes everyday now and isn't crying, pushing and straining to go.

Re: Please help. 3 week old baby won't poop

This happened with my DS. He would go 3 or 4 days. We finally took him to the ped who said this happens sometimes with bf babies. Our ped recommended milk of magnesia. It worked for DS. See what your ped recommends
