please help me - SLR and money related
after taking my old digital camera to the zoo i have realized that i am in desperate need for an SLR.
i was going to wait for my birthday in march, but that's just too far away, and i would really like to have it for DS's first birthday in september.
can someone recommend where i can get the camera and maybe one or two lenses for less than $800? i looked on B&H and the package i want is close to $900 and that is still a lot.
is it unreasonable of me to want to spend closer to $500 or $600?
i was hoping for the nikon D60, i would love the D90 but since i'm never going to be doing this professionally, i think the D60 will suit my needs just fine.
i am also open to other suggestions like the canon rebel, if someone has used both.
thanks so much for any help you can give me

With what lens???? It's not listed? Do they mean the one on the camera itself?
If so, then the D60 seems better.

I don't know anything about Nikon, but the kit lens with the Canon isn't nearly as good as the 50 mm f/1.8 lens in terms of portrait shots. We bought the camera body (no lens) and then the 50 mm f/1.8 lens separately.

Re: please help me - SLR and money related
Check Amazon as well.
We just bought a D60 body, with an 18-105 vf af lens, both factory demos. Which mean-- they are used, but not really and come under warranty. I got them at Cameta on 110.
I think the two together were under $600, but brand new-- they would have been much more.
The guy said-- it's the same, just different box. We were going to get new- but after asking about it, thought this was a better way to spend our money and upgrade the lens a bit.

Re: please help me - SLR and money related
Best Buy is reputable, but be careful about buying from certain online photo places that have deals that seem too good to be true. If they're selling cameras for at least $100 less than B&H, they're likely selling gray market products. Companies won't give you a warranty on a grey market product since they're not intended to be sold in the U.S.

Re: please help me - SLR and money related
that's an excellent deal for the D60. I got mine at Best Buy (got a 2 lens kit last fall for about $700) and it had the 18-55 lens. I am a total Nikon person, so I'll always go for one over a Canon, but I have to say, the D60 is easy to use, easy to learn and you can do some fantastic photography with it. Don't worry so much abt the mpx, b/c the honest truth is that unless you plan on blowing up your photos to about 24"x36", the 1-3 mpx difference won't matter.

Re: please help me - SLR and money related
The Nikon d40 is the intro-level DSLR from Nikon. I have it and love it. I still use it on auto for everything but it has served my purposes very well so far. It came with 2 lenses...the 18-55 and the 55-200 VR, along with the camera bag, DVD and a few other things I think. It was a gift, but I believe it was around $700 or so (maybe a little more). My MIL got it at Ritzcamera.com.
In a few years I'll likely upgrade to another Nikon, but the d40 is perfect for me for a LONG time coming.

Re: please help me - SLR and money related
I have the canon but the lens it came with sucks, I have a larger lens thats a bit more cumbersome to take with me everywhere, but other than that I love my canon!

Re: please help me - SLR and money related
I could have sworn I recently saw a SLR at Costco...either Nikon or Canon - maybe both.
I don't remember the price but check it out - maybe check online.

Re: please help me - SLR and money related
i had the nikon d80 and loved it (lost it on our trip )
now that i'm in the market again for a new slr, i realized that i don't need all those megapixels. i'd rather go as low as i can go, save the $ and buy a great lens or two.
i was determined to get a d40, but was told that you need to make sure any lens you use on it says "AF-S" or else you can't use the auto focus function and have to focus manually. other than that, the price is great and just what i needed.
DH insisted that we try out a canon this time around and when we went to the photo store, i tried it out to see how it felt, how the controls worked, etc. i liked it and figured, if the two (nikon and canon) are both reputable brands, it wouldn't hurt to try out a new one. one thing that was music to my ears - in general, canon lenses are cheaper than nikon lenses. the 50mm 1.8 lens that canon has is $99 compared to $140 ish from nikon.
any camera that you buy is going to be an investment to begin with...make sure you like the feel and look of whichever one you go for and don't go for high megapixels...you don't need them!

Re: please help me - SLR and money related
I 2nd Cameta Camera. I bought ours online via one of thier auctions and paid under 500.00 for the D60 18-55mm kit. I then went to B&H and bought the 55-200 VR lens for under 200.00.
I had a great conversation with a salesman and he said Nikon makes the best lenses. $$$ but the proof is in the pictures. Try out different cameras and buy what feels right and does what you want.
