Please help me decide- should I get tips on? (update)

My nails are so short b/c I can't stop picking at them. I want to let them grow, but have to break thishabit. lol I was thinking of getting the UV gel tips. Does anyone have them? What are your opinions? Thanks! Chat Icon
I am really bad at making decisions...I really want them, but I also want to have my own nails. Chat Icon

Thank you all so much for your advice! Chat Icon I decided that I am going to try and let me own nails grow. I bought this maximum growth nail polish and I have been putting it on every day. In about a week, I am going to start going for a manicure once a week. Thanks again!!

i often flip flop with that question!!!

I ultimately decided to forego it because of the cost.

When my nails get really short, I get tips and leave them on for about a month. My nails grow underneath, and then I take off the tips. My nails are usually weak after having tips, so then I use Nailtique to make them stronger.

After 34 years of nail biting, I finally stopped 3 months ago...and grew these!

I stopped biting because I chipped my tooth! Chat Icon

But I am so glad I stopped. Now I have nails...finally!

Don't mind the polish...I did my own nails in 6 minutes while my little one was eating lunch! Chat Icon

You can do it!! Stop biting!! If I can do it, so can you!!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I seriously doubt I will ever stop biting my nails. I know its a gross habit....
But I want to look professional, so I get tips. It is an expense, and requires upkeep, but I love the way my hands and nail look. Looks much better than bitten short nails... For me, its worth the time and expense

Totally agree!

i have bad nails, i dont bite them at all but they are and always have been very weak and think.
i always get tips on, hate the way the people do them (too think and wide), get mad and rip them off. then i get manicures and get pizzed beacuse the polish chips like the next day!!! i have had my tips off for like 2 months now and im starting to feel like i have man hands again, im getting the tip itch.
i say get them.. but make sure you go to a good place. i have had three bad experiences with UV Gel nails

My nails were completely ruined after I took my nails off. I wouldnt get them done. Go get nail strengthener/hardner and use that. My nails grew like weeds when I started using it.

Honestly, it's a commitment. If you don't mind going every other week for a fill-in (or if you're neurotic like me, go every week) and can make the financial investment go for it!

Just remember, your nails will be thin and brittle when it comes time for you to remove them.

Re: Please help me decide- should I get tips on?

Here's my take on the UV gel nails. I got them for the first time two months ago and have kept up with them, getting fill-ins every 2 weeks.

While they look the most natural, I found they are the most expensive. For me, I had to go to a good salon for them to last even a week without cracking or breaking. I'm happy with the results now, but it's not something I will continue for much longer because of the cost.

Also, when I started getting the uv gel, they did NOT put tips on. They just put the gel over my natural nail, so they were never "extended". For the first several weeks, I felt like I had a french manicure on my stubby fingers.

Now they look great, and I've even had them cut down a few times.

Out of silk wraps, uv gel and permanent french acrylic nails, I like the look of the uv gel nails the best. However, the permanent french acrylic nails were the strongest and least expensive to maintain (and the quickest for a fill-in). But most people don't want to go with acrylic.

That's my 3 cents!

Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: Please help me decide- should I get tips on?

I am not a fan. I have had them many many times .........and no matter HOW much I spend or how great of a person I go to, they just never look natural 'enough' to me ...........I also hated that I HAD to go and have them done every two weeks, or I looked like trash - I felt like I was a slave to those stupid nails -

I am a nail biter and my cuticles get absolutely disgusting if I skip my weekly manicure ........but as long as I keep up w/ my $5 weekly manicure, my nails look great. -

HOWEVER, I personally like to keep my nails fairly short and neat. If you like your nails long, the acrylic or whatever is probably the way to go .....It's just a PITA to keep up with. -

Re: Please help me decide- should I get tips on?

I wouldn't simply because the one time I did- (for a special occassion)- they ruined my real nails and they took FOREVER to grow after that.
They kept peeling and splitting and breaking.
I feel like the glue, etc, really weakened my own nails underneath.

Re: Please help me decide- should I get tips on?

I have long nails i started coating them with acrylic 10 years ago when we bought a house and i started breaking them doing work. I haven't taken off the acrylic since but as said above if you opt to take off the acrylic your nails will be ruined until you grow them out.

What i i told my daughter instead for getting tips let them coat your own nails with the acrylic and let your own nails grow to a comfortable length. The place i go uses a powder like acrylic but its called solar nails and its much nice then the old acrylic look. I also stretch my fill to about every 3 to 4 weeks.

The one time I did, my real nails got so week, it took a year for them to feel normal. I would go for weekly manicures - it makes a huge difference!

Do not do it! I had aryclic for years and ended up with an abscess under my nail and mold. I took them all off last fall. I had to take antibiotics and soak my nail in bleach and water. It took a long time but it is gone and I will NEVER get them again. I use rejovacote and get weekly manicures. HTH My nails look great now.

I pick at my nails when I'm stressed and the only way i get them to be strong a decent is that I use vitamin e oil (sally hansen) on them at least daily. When I start picking at them i start always putting the oil on them
