Please Help Me Like Day Care
Andrew's been in day care since January. I love the socialization aspect he has with other babies and I love that his basic needs are being met (something DH struggled with), BUT he's been sick the entire time!
Pink Eye (twice) Bronchitis Bronchiolitis (not sure of the diff.) Roseola Ear infection (twice) Sent home with fevers twice
Are all day care centers such GERM FESTS?
Uggh, anyway I just needed to vent, thanks!
Edited to add the ear infections I forgot about!

Re: Please Help Me Like Day Care
I think the colds are unavoidable. This is what always helped me get through it. One of the peds in my practice had his son in the same day care and what he said was that they are building up their immunities now so that later (when they go to school) they will not be sick as much.
Ryna is 3 now and (pretending those bricks are wood) he does not get sick as often. One of my GF son started preschool this year and he is ALWAYS sick!

Re: Please Help Me Like Day Care
I am sorry your son has been so sick. My son has been in day care for two years, but he only goes two days a week now. He used to go four days and started at 2 1/2 months. He gets a lot of colds and stomach bugs, and has had two ear infections. But it sounds like your son is getting some serious illnesses. It is good that they sent him home twice with fevers... at least it shows that they don't keep sick babies there, but I would wonder about the cleaning of toys and all. Is there any way to find out if other kids have been so sick? It is true that he is building up an immune system, but imo, it seems like a lot. Hope your little guy feels better soon!

Re: Please Help Me Like Day Care
I have heard that children who don't get sick in daycare, get sick in Kindergarden.
It is really hard in the beginning.

Re: Please Help Me Like Day Care
Thanks everyone for your responses. I might research getting a nanny. In the meantime, I think our day care place is relatively forthcoming about the illnesses being passed around. This latest one (roseola) was going around in the toddler room. They said maybe Andrew was exposed b/c at the end of the night (he's there late) he is put together with whichever kids are left in one room.
I am not sure how they clean the toys and in general keep things up. I'll ask them.

Re: Please Help Me Like Day Care
Make sure to ask how often they are cleaning the toys. Day Care will have them getting sicker than home care, but if it is a lot they are most likely not cleaning the toys enough. Ask them if when something contagious is in a room if they do a full-on cleaning to totally disinfect the classroom. Also keep an eye out to see if the caregivers are washing their hands frequently, that is another way kids get sick. Do they clean the changing tables with bleach? A lot of illnesses can be passed through fecal matter so if they aren't cleaning the changing table with bleach and water it could be another reason he keeps getting sick. The good thing will be that by the time he is about 2 his resistance will be awesome. My son got sick a lot when he first started and he is where I work so I can understand your frustration.

Re: Please Help Me Like Day Care
Alex has been in daycare since December and it was hell for the first 10 weeks. She had a cold 2-3 times a week and came down with RSV (thankfully it only lasted a few days). Now, though, it seems like her resistance is getting better. All the babies are sick and have been dropping like flies but Alex hasn't had a cold or fever (knock on wood!) for 3+ weeks... hang in there, things will start to get better as the weather warms up and as your little one starts to build up a resistance to all the little germies

Thanks. I do know they wipe the changing table down with diluted bleach after each diaper change. And it's always seemed pretty sanitary when I've gone to the room. I will find out about the toy cleaning later.
I have heard that ultimately this is good for his immune system later on but it's so tough to see him suffer so much.
