Please Help, my dog had a tick
It looked like a little lima bean, it was on his ear, (he is a long hair dachshund) so i got the flashlight and the tweezers and got it out.
There is a little bump there, do i have to call the vet? Is he going to get something from this?

Re: Please Help, my dog had a tick
Did you get the whole tick out? You may have left the head in there and that's what is making the bump.
For now, call the vet.
For the future, I smother them with vaseline and then pull them out with a tweezer right up at the head.

Just keep an eye on it to see that it doesnt get really red. If it does, then i would call the vet. You might have NOT gotten the head.

Re: Please Help, my dog had a tick
Call the vet! I found a tick on my dog, pulled it out and a year later she had lymes disease. We don't live in a high risk area and we don;t take her to high risk areas. I would not take it lightly like we did. I took it out and thought she would be fine. This disease can harour for a long time before any symptoms occur.

Call the vet - you want to make sure you got it all out and that the dog didn't contract lymes disease.

I normally wouldn't say it for a tick either...but there is a lump where the tick was - so either she didn't get the whole thing or it may have given the dog lyme disease (a red lump is the first sign of lyme). Hence, the reason I suggested to call the vet.

I never called the vet when my dog had gotten a tick. If you feel you didn't get it all you might want to though.

What does the vaseline do? Does it make it easier or harder to get them out or just smother them?
Call the vet asap. They may give your dog a quick course of antibiotics that will prevent any infeciton.

I read that dogs don't alwys get redness when contracting a disease from a tick.
I would call the vet for sure for some guidance, esp if t here is a bump.

It smothers the tick and they release their grip to try to back out and breathe. Makes them easier to remove.

Re: Please Help, my dog had a tick
I would call the vet just to see if the dog had his lyme disease vaccine in case you don't remember. My aunt's god gets ticks pulled off of him 20 at a time from where they live in NJ, and he does not go to the vet whenever they find any.

OMG. 20 at a time? Does the dog go into brush/woods?

They live in NJ in the area around great adventure and he is always out in the brush. There are a lot of deer in this area and other animals so they are all over the place. My aunt forgot to put the advantix on him before she left on a business trip, so when she got home she was pulled about 20 ticks off of him. He typically only gets a few at a time even with the meds given, but he has never gotten sick over the years.

Two problems with that...sometimes they dig in more cuz of the heat and you could burn the dog.
