PLEASE HELP...moms whose DCs had colic.

When did it start??? and what were the syptoms.

DS slept all day like an angel and then at 7:30 woke up and would not go back to sleep until 2 am. He seemed extremely hungry (always rooting). He also looked very gassy.

Yesterday I did start giving him powder formula but then stopped later during the night and bought some Similac Sensative instead. He also had the Hep b shot yesterday.

He is only 6 days old. Could this be the the start of colic. Me and DH was going nuts yesterday. Nothing really consoled him except holding him and forcing him to suck the binky. He hated the swaddle too.

Re: PLEASE HELP...moms whose DCs had colic.

Colic usually doesn't start until about 2 weeks in. It sounds like typical newborn fussiness- pluus he has his das and nights mixed up. To *fix* that keep him in a bright room with normal daytime noises (TV, talking, etc) during the day. At night, keep the lights low, very quiet, little to no stimulation while feeding/changing diapers.

I remember feeling totally out of sorts with #2- even though #1 was only 17 months old. It's amazing how much we forget about the *pain* that is the NB phase!

I definitely wouldn't be switching up formulas too much as that can cause tummy problems, so I'd keep him on the one you're using now for at least 2 weeks before making other changes. Also- even if he fights it- put him in the swaddle. I think manytimes we *think* that our NBs hate it because they seem to struggle against it. But think about it- all those movements we feel in the final weeks of pregnancy are the baby *struggling* against the constraints of the uterus. I TRULY feel the swaddle is one of the BEST ways to soothe a newborn (along with ssssshhing in their ear).

Good luck and congratulations!!!!

Jacob was colic from Day 1. His symptoms: constantly crying. A high pitched cry. Very gassy and would scream more when I would put him down. We switched his formula which helped a little but what made a real difference was when the dr. started him on Zantac. It was a miracle!

I think alot of people get colic confused with reflux..same symptoms, different cause imo..
my kids had one of each..my son was colicky..he was miserable from day 1..he cried from 6am until 11pm CONSTANTLY, and being held didnt even soote it alot of times..he did sleep through the nite young, but i think its because he was exhausted from screaming his head off all day lol..i think colic is a neurological thing..i know theres no real answers for it yet, but we changed my ds' formula SEVEN times, and NOTHING helped..not even the alimentum or nutramigen..it only got better on its own at about 4 1/2 months, when the dr said it would..it simply went away..
alot of the happiest baby on the block (5 s') helped to soothe him
SOMETIMES..but really its a waiting game
Reflux, as far as i know can start early, BUT gets progressively worse around the 5-6 week mark, which my dd was RIGHT on cue for..
her symptoms were CONSTANT sucking, gagging on nothing, (looked like she would have a throw up burp), arching her back and neck when she cried as if in pain.. and alot of discomfort only soothed when eating because it felt good to swallow something..as soon as we gave in to giving her a binky and the dr put her on Axid, she was a new baby..most babies have ALOT worse symptoms then she did..alot of projectile vomiting etc..
i think at 6 days old, its still hard to
tell..but what i would do is start writing down "fussy" symptoms on a piece of paper..
start writing the times, what he was doing right before (if he just ate, or just woke up) when his last poop was..aeverything hes doing..we did that, and were able to see that my dd wasnt colicky at all, but had a touch of reflux
good luck!! i know its hard with #2, but it gets better!!
