Please please please tell me I can get a massage... UPDATE
I am almost 12 weeks and my back is KILLING me. I got a gift cert for TWO massages for my birthday a little over a month ago and I am in desperate need. I can't wait any longer.
Am I far enough along that they will do one??
UPDATE... I called my doc and they gave me the go ahead... at 1 45 tomorrow, this mama is getting rubbed down!! My back is so excited!

I am not sure. You should just call your doctor and ask. I hope you can get one.

Re: Please please please tell me I can get a massage...
I think normally they do it after 14 weeks and you need to go to someone that knows how to do prenatal massages...this is what I've heard, not sure it's overkill or not....

If you are pregnant, most places require a note from your doctor
Im 37 weeks and the doc gave me a note last week saying I can get a pregnancy massage - I am going this weekend

that is so annoying-- I was just at the doc on Tuesday. I wish I knew I needed a note. I have been waiting to book a prenatal massage for WEEKS thinking I needed to wait til I was further along and today, my back is just in desperate need....
I guess I can call the spa and ask them...

Re: Please please please tell me I can get a massage...
I did not need a note however, most places will only allow you to get one after 14 weeks for their own insurance issues.
I was told by my doctor that a massage will not cause a miscarriage, but most places institute the 14 week rule so they can not be sued if something does happen after a person gets a massage.

You are not supposed to have a massage in your first trimester. Ask your OB when she/he thinks it's ok.

Re: Please please please tell me I can get a massage...
You need to be out of your first trimester. I know that's an issue under great debate but I'd error on the side of caution and say 14+ weeks.
I was 21 weeks yesterday and going for my first prenatal massage on Sunday. I CAN NOT wait!!

Re: Please please please tell me I can get a massage...
the toxins that are released during a massage can be passed onto the baby no prenatal massages during the 1st trimester...wait it out you've got a couple more weeks to go!!

Re: Please please please tell me I can get a massage...
I had one (from a place that specializes in maternal massages) at 13 weeks. The doctor said it was ok at my 12 week appointment, but I didn't need a note or anything.

Toxins would be flushed out with drinking lots of water. That's like saying you can't workout during your 1st trimester because you will release toxins (same toxins!).
They main reason it's not done in the 1st trimester is because it is a VERY fragile time when actually most miscarriage happen (and I said most). This is why a lot of places do not do it, even with a dr.'s note, since it is an increased liability to them also.
This is also a time when your hormones are completely adjusting. Lots of MS, etc. So a lot of people do get sick after the massage.

Now this makes sense to me! I didn't understand the toxin thing at all!
