Haven't played computer games in forever but there are still my favorites:
-Oregon Trail
-Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
-SimCity
-The Sims
For Kids:
-Any of the Jump Start Games
ETA: I also love playing Jeopardy and there are a bunch of free games on the Game Show Network website

I second Oregon Trail......
I really dig the free downloads from Yahoo. If I like the game then I buy it. I also like LifeTime games too. It's the same you can try it and then buy it.

build a lot ... I dl'd it for free from a promotion.
Hubs plays games on a site called mutant ninja  He likes some monkey game.
I also love the diner dash and other similar games like hot dish and cooking school ??? BUT I've never bought them, just play the free trials!

There's always Pogo.com.  Mostly free on there
I joined smallworlds while unemployed, really like that one. The younger kids get a little annoying, but I just ignore them and go about my way.
