Please read this article- All smoke detectors are NOT created equal
Everyone has been talking about fire safety and smoke detectors in light of the tragedy yesterday. It reminded me of a 20/20 episode DH and I watched last year that had him RUNNING out to replace all our smoke detectors Please read this article- it sums up the differences.
All Smoke Detectors are NOT Created Equal
Pretty much you need to make sure you have an the ionization alarm - it is more expensive- almost double the price- but well worth it. It detects smoke and fire in about half the time of a standard photoelectric alarm- which is what most people have in their homes.

Thank you for this. DS was just asking me about fire safety after he had firemen come to his school. I need a new detector upstairs.

Re: Please read this article- All smoke detectors are NOT created equal
I thought you wanted a photoelectric bc they are responsive to even smoldering fires where ionization where more responsive to flaming fires?
Im so confused now.
Either way, my smoke detector goes off the second I open my over door even if there is NO SMOKE PRESENT that I can see....every single time. LOL.
ETA: what the hell do I know, the ones we have are all ionization, just got up and checked.
Thanks for the tip and making me check and checked all the batteries while I was up anyway.

after the other thread, I'm putting them in our bedrooms too, and I'll be sure to get the ionization kind! Thanks for sharing!

Not totally true. Photoelectric alarms are better at detecting smoldering fires, which leads to smoke inhalation. Actually, neither one is "better" until after the fire is over, and you knew which type of fire you just had. It's best to have a combination of both.
http://www.nfpa.org/safety-information/for-consumers/fire-and-safety-equipment/smoke-alarms/ionization-vs-photoelectric This is a page by an impartial fire safety organization stating that both types have their pluses and minuses, and you need both in the home. I would not suggest replacing 100% of your existing photo alarms with ionic alarms.
Allstate says the same thing, and they are paying money to rebuild homes that have fire damage, so you know they want to keep claims down to a minimum.

thanks for this extra info! I actually looked and we do have a mix of both types. I just thought this was eye opening because I never knew there were 2 kinds and that they worked differently. It was very scary to watch the demos they did on the show of how one was going off and the other hadn't even detected the fire yet. And the ionization alarms are quite a bit more expensive

Re: Please read this article- All smoke detectors are NOT created equal
Interesting counter-point to the ionization alarms, from an experienced Fire Chief:
http://consumerist.com/2010/08/25/fire-chief-most-smoke-alarms-are-useless-endanger-users/
Fire alarms make you feel safe, but an Albany, Calif. fire chief says it’s a false sense of security. Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, the chief says most people equip their homes with cheaper ionization alarms, which detect smoke via an electric current and can lead to false alarms (such as reacting to overcooked food) while missing genuine dangers until it’s too late. The chief says people should opt for slightly more expensive photoelectric alarms, which use more accurate light beams to alert fire victims.
According the story, ionization alarms run about $10 while photoelectric versions cost $15.
The chief tells the Chronicle:
Ionization alarms are the ones that go off when you burn your toast, and they can be so annoying that nearly a quarter of the people who own them turn them off. But even more important, they go off a lot slower than photoelectrics, and by the time you hear them it can be too late. We absolutely have to get rid of them.
I'm still rooting for the mix of sensors options. Hedge your bets in both directions.

My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I also insisted on fire ladders upstairs. So far we have two (our room- my son sleeps with us & our guest room), but I plan on getting one for each room as they become occupied.

It should. If not, just Google the brand/model number, and you'll find info about it.

You're definitely not crazy. There's no reason NOT to have ladders on the 2nd+ floor rooms. We have them in all of our bedrooms. Stairways are like chimneys. A stairway fire means the only way out of the house is through a window. A 2nd story drop can cause a lot of damage to a person!

agreed, we have them in each bedroom bc you never know where and if you may become trapped.
Speaking of....is there a recommended way to get down them? Say if you have to carry a small child who couldn't navigate the ladder themselves?
