Please read..Re: my 95 year old grandmother..
I am really at a loss here. I cant imagine what is going on...
2 years ago, my grandmother got sick and wound up in a rehab center. She was living on her own before that but when she was released, we knew she would have to live and be cared for by my mom and sister. She has been in there house for 2 years now. She is now 95.
Now, physically, besides arthritis and not being able to walk to well just due to age, she was fine. Mentally though, she has been "gone" for years. She hardly spoke anymore..she didnt remember who people were one minute and the next remembered right away..it was almost like she had symptoms of alzheimers at times. She basically just ate and slept most of the day. Never asked for anything..never asked about her apartment that she never went back to..never asked for her purse (which she was addicted to carrying with her everywhere for years before this)..didnt really understand the fact that I had a baby..just basically mentally gone.
Now this is the grandmother we got used to. Her basic needs were cared for..she was loved but we knew her limits and they included not even being able to have a normal conversation with her anymore.
Now get this!
All of a sudden today..she is more mentally "with it" than she was before she even started living with my mom. She knows all of our names..is asking about her apartment..is watching tv and commenting on what shes watching..she watched a cooking show earlier and when I went to moms, told me all about what the guy made and how I would love it because I love chocolate. Its literally SCARY!
We cant figure out whats going on..if she was in and out of being lucid over the past 2 years, we would understand it. But that hasnt been the case. She hasnt been lucid AT ALL for 2 YEARS!!
Has anyone experienced anything like this before? It scares me because I remember reading a while ago that when they got like this, it may be the beginning of the end. Even if thats your experience, can you please share it with me, just for some feedback. My dh told me he watched er once and this had happened to an older lady .Apparently she had a bundle blockage in her brain and it broke free on its own. When it did...all memory came back and the old personality with it.
Anyone???? This is SO ODD!

The brain is so complicated, and no one understands totally what happens to cause these things... I have not experienced it personally, but I have heard of Alzheimer's patients who suddenly are lucid, but sadly it doesn't last.

I have heard this too. Also, do you think she could have had some sort of depression that went undiagnosed or something?
The only other thing that comes close to what you mention is when a close friend of the family, an older woman, had a brain aneurysm and they were able to take care of it in time. However for weeks, I presume while the swelling went down, in the hopsital she was in the state that you describe your grandmother being in, ie not lucid, not recognizing anyone, not really speaking too much, just almost "turned off" yet awake. Then one day bam! back to her old self we knew.
to you and your grandma!
