Whats a great lens for portraits?

I would say average user. I am by no means a professional but I do know how to use my camera properly. I just want to take good shots of my DS.

For the average person either buy a 50MM single focal length (but you have to move with your kid to zoom or zoom out) or a zoom with 50 or 85MM in it.

I have and use the majority of the time my 50mm and my 85mm.
They are definately my go to lenses and take great pictures.
