Please recommend the best product to grow grass!
Our builder will put down seed and straw to cover it from the elements and birds but shouldn't we be doing something else to it besides watering it?

oy! the best way to do it is to get top soil, put it in a bucket (or wheel barrow), mix the seeds into it and put it down. the seeds don't fly away this way (it's been so windy lately), you still may get birds but won't get the seeds tucked away in the dirt, only the seeds on the top.
i have had success this way, and only this way.
i can grow grass in literally one week - two weeks - TOPS!

Straw and seeds are good but you should also apply a product called Starter Fertilizer by Scoots when the seeds are down. The before and after is amazing with this stuff and it helps the seeds come up faster..

I planted seeds last week with peet moss on top of it. I've been watering every day and FINALLY today they sprouted.

We're in the process of growing grass as well - we used Scott's seed and starter fertilizer and it's coming in nicely.

Yes def the Starter fertilizer. I don't know if there are different kinds of Starter but you don't want weed killer. I think the weed killer is only in the Turf Builder but just make sure. We have lot of new grass here and I was almost ready to sod. So glad we didnt waste the $$

I am totally against chemical fertilizers - they seep into our water systems and are a danger to pets and children, as well as all living things.

Is there an alternative besides sod that we can use? I have a large piece of property and just can't leave it all dirt.

Sod farms use the worse chemicals for the environment...
Mowing your lawn with a gas lawn mower is worse for the environment. Go electric people...

hey Dana,
The builder puts down garbage seed...you should reseed it with good seed, fertilizer and straw. You will have to water it often.... It will take probably two seasons before it starts to look good.
You should do this in the spring or fall...due to the extreme heat down here.

Thanks Nicole! I was hoping it would look good sooner but just the fact that I will have my own lawn-I don't care!!

She's correct, you pick your own seeds.

I'm bummed about this. I was under the impression that they were giving us SOME lawn. I also didn't want to spend more money than we already have spent but oh well. I wasn't even thinking about the pesticide thing, I was just excited. BUT we are getting an electric mower.

You get some lawn from their seeds...however its very thin and sporadic. Good luck and happy grass growing!

Hey Dana, the norm down here is fescue (grows in the thickest and withstands southern heat), we also have bermuda grass in our backyard.
We used Southern Gold seed and it has been great! (We got it at Home Depot).
