Please say a prayer for Jessie Davis
Volunteers will resume search today for Jessie Davis

Uniontown -- Fifteen hundred people volunteered Thursday for a mission of mercy: find Jessie Davis, the pregnant Stark County woman who hasn't been heard from in nine days.
They fanned out across 12 square miles of this Canton suburb, their desperate search taking them through the rugged terrain of an abandoned strip mine, grassy residential back yards and the pine-scented fields of a local Christmas tree farm.
The end result? They'll do it again today.
The massive effort -- delayed at one point by a passing thunderstorm -- failed to locate Davis or uncover a clue to explain her disappearance. The day included one heart-stopping moment: the discovery of a grave-size plot of freshly turned earth within the strip mine.
Crime-scene investigators spent hours at the site before concluding it held only recently planted marijuana seeds.
"We knew there was a possibility it wasn't going to be her," said Scott Wilson, a spokesman with the FBI, which is assisting the Stark County Sheriff's Office. "Now, we go on with the investigation and find out what happened to Jessie."
Davis, due to deliver a girl on July 3, vanished sometime after a June 13 phone conversation with her mother, Patty Porter. She was reported missing last Friday after Porter arrived at Davis' Lake Township duplex and found only her daughter's 2-year-old son, Blake Davis.
Investigators found no sign of forced entry, but they doubt Davis left willingly. Deputies discovered her upstairs bedroom in disarray, with a toppled nightstand and bleach poured on the carpet. Missing from the bed was a red-and-gold patterned comforter that resembles an Oriental rug.
Blake gave deputies an eerie account of what he saw: "Mommy was crying. Mommy broke the table . . . Mommy's in rug."
Chief Deputy Rick Perez said officials have no suspects in the case; efforts to locate Davis over the past week fizzled.
On Thursday, the masses hit the streets to help.
The support "overwhelmed" organizers from Texas EquuSearch, a renowned search group that took up the cause. At one point, the line of people flowing to the designated meeting point -- the Greentown Fire Station -- stretched one-eighth of a mile.
EquuSearch Director Tim Miller said he expected 200 helpers. He said the turnout was the second-largest out of 704 searches run by the group since it formed seven years ago.
"I think every rock out there will be turned over on this search," Miller said.
Davis' sister, Whitney, offered another prediction: "I think we're going to find her."
One team of searchers thought it did.
The group of 100 -- including Davis' father, Ned, and other family members -- poured into an abandoned strip mine property. They walked side by side in lines to scour the rough terrain, pushing past pricker bushes and picking through piles of debris.
Just after noon, Christopher Stump spotted a trail of flattened grass leading off of a narrow path. He followed the trail up a slight incline before coming upon a dug-up section of land roughly 6 feet long and 3 feet wide.
"Sgt. E!," he yelled, calling the group's leader, Eric East of the Springfield Township Police Department.
East inspected the spot and then quickly radioed for cadaver dogs to be brought in. The canines reacted to the overturned soil, bringing scores of investigators to the location about 750 feet south of Highland Park Road. Members of Davis' family quickly gathered, too.
By early evening, however, officials announced that a body was not beneath the disturbed soil.
During the day, volunteers pledged to do all they could to help the Davis family. Alfreda Myers, 47, of Canton, hobbled through her search on a left ankle she broke three months ago. She waved off the pain while walking with her husband and daughter.
"However much it hurts," she said, "is nothing compared to the pain that family is feeling."
Later on Thursday, more than 100 people gathered at the House of the Lord in Akron for a prayer vigil for Davis.
In the light-filled sanctuary, where a movie screen flashed a photo of Davis, people bowed their heads and kneeled at the altar. Church leaders led prayers asking for help locating Davis: "Which direction should we take? Where should we be looking?" asked Cheryl Warfield, the church minister.
Today's search is to begin at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers should again meet at the fire station, 10100 Cleveland Ave., in Uniontown.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I do not personally know her but this story is so sad. She has a young boy and another baby on the way. She can use all the prayers she can get.
The Texas group was formed by a man whose daughter was kidnapped. It was started in the same sad way that America's Most Wanted was started.
This is the picture of her last seen in a supermarket. That is why they are throwing around the theory that someone was watching her.
Honestly curious - What about the picture gives rise to the theory that someone was watching her? The fact that her son was waving?
