Brought our cockapoo home wed night. He gets a bit nippy and it hurts! Of course we can deal, but I'm afraid he'll nip a non family member. We want to socialize him a lot but I'm nervous about this behavior! TIA!

how old is he? could be teething. but puppies and dogs like to nip feet. you can try and hold or cover his snout for a few seconds, that is what his mom would do if he misbehaved. Its her form of punishment.

There is a specific way to do this.

When he nips you have to TELL him it hurts. In our puppy class they said mimic the sound of a puppy. An "ow" sound. A little high pitched. The way puppies learn they are hurting another dog in the pack is the same way. They will nip, the other dog will squal and pull away.

So when we got my dog and he would nip (a hand for example) we would go "ow" and pull our hand away. You have to TEACH them that it hurts.

I have been holding her mouth closed and saying a stern no.

Maggie only would chew on DHs hands - he would rinse them in mouth wash or spray them with breath spray. It worked

This is the best method.

If you find something that works let me know. We've tried yelping "ow", we've tried holding her snout or tongue, and also only playing with her while holding a toy and she still does it. At 4.5 months she just lost the last of her puppy teeth, so we are hoping it starts to subside. At least the adult teeth aren't as needle like so it doesn't hurt as much. But I have scratches/bites all over my hands and arms.

This!!! It worked great with Shammy. Even now if we are playing rough with him and he accidently nips us all we have to do is say ow and he stops and retreats immediately.
