Please tell me what you know about Queens and rentals
I recently landed a job on the Nassau/Queens border. I currently live in Suffolk and the commute one way is well over an hour.
With that said, I've decided to look for a one bedroom, one bath apartment.
Originally, I was looking in the area I work (Great Neck) but it's more than I can afford. So I started to look into Queens. The prices seem much better for me (no higher than say $1300/month) and I'd be that closer to the city which is important to me.
I'm not familiar with Queens at ALL. My family is from Brooklyn, and I've lived on the Island pretty much my entire life.
So if anyone can recommend nabes, buildings (I don't want to live in a house) I'd really appreciate it!!
Oh and lastly, is my budgeted amount for rent ($1300/month) unrealistic?
Any information you can offer would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Bayside and Little Neck are nice. There is a nice building right next to the LIRR in Bayside. I lived in a building in Little Neck about 8 years ago called Country Neck Estates. The rent then was 900 for a large studio, but it had a pool and tennis court.

bayside would be great for your commute and a nice restaurants/shops
if you want to be closer to manhattan - forest hills is a bit closer, LIRR and subway and great shops/restaurants/etc
both are safe areas

Re: Please tell me what you know about Queens and rentals
I would also recommend bayside. Perfect area for you.
It'll be about 20 mins to great neck. Bayside has bell blvd, so many bars, resturants yet its such a residential area, still nice and quiet.
Right next to highways like the clearview expy which can take you to the LIE or the Grand Central. $1300 for a bedroom is a very good budget.

Re: Please tell me what you know about Queens and rentals
Bayside is definitely topping my short list. I've been told Bell Blvd is a great strip with a number of bars, restaurants and shopping. Plus it's like a 20 minute train ride to NYC, yes?
Can anyone tell me about the following areas?
Douglaston Murray Hill Glen Oaks Forest Hills
ETA: Thank you all for the responses, I really appreciate it!!

Train from Bell is like 25 minutes. Strip is great better night life than all mentioned w/exception of Forest Hills. However FH is further from Great Neck (maybe 15 minutes) and might be more for a 1bdrm then Bayside (I could be wrong).
Upside to FH is that there is a lot going on, more urban than Bayside--more stores, train not just LIRR.

Glen Oaks is nice but the town is changing & I personally wouldn't look to move in there now. The commute to the city is tough from there. Douglaston & Little Neck are great areas (that's where I live & lirr trains are close) Bayside is nice too & great if you are single because of bell blvd. I looked into Murray Hill a few years ago -it seemed nice but don't know much about it.

Re: Please tell me what you know about Queens and rentals
My ILS live in Bayside. It is very nice, but I don't like that it is not very close to the subway. But since you are working in Great Neck, I assume you will be driving? Do you have any need to get into the city?

I live in FH and we pay more than $1300 for our one bedroom. But I do LOVE my neighborhood. If you shopped around with a realtor, you might be able to find something in your price range.

Re: Please tell me what you know about Queens and rentals
I would definitly look into bayside by Francis Lewis (there is a train there) and then N. Flushing by Main Street and Crochron. You have the Main St. train station. Those I believe those lines take you into Great Neck. If you want to drive, it will not take you more than 30 minutes durning rush hour to get from those areas to Great Neck ( I did that commute for a year) and once you get to the queens boarder you can take local streets.
I wanted to add that the trains I was were talking about is the LIRR. We were walking distance to the Main St. station when DH worked in the city and it was 25 minutes into Penn. If you are a Mets fan, 10 minutes to Citi.

My only need to get into the city is on a social basis; I love to go in on the weekends to go to museums and just hang out.
And yes, I would be driving to work in Great Neck so not having a subway nearby wouldn't be terrible.

Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck all great areas for you. Be careful about parking - finding on the street parking can be a pain.

Re: Please tell me what you know about Queens and rentals
I work in Bayside and live in Forest Hills
I really like both areas, and though I think $1300 for a 1-bedroom is easier to find in Bayside, I do think it exists in Forest Hills.
One thing though: parking is DEFINITELY much much easier in Bayside than in Forest Hills, so if you have a car Bayside is probably a better option. It's also closer to Great Neck.
