PLEASE VOTE FOR SCHOOL BUDGETS ON TUES!!!
While in some districts they may seem like large increases, we have to consider the rising costs of everything, too. Please go out and vote on Tues for school budgets.....
there are many people (and students!) who are relying on you!

teachers, students, secretaries, janitors, mechanics, ground workers, plumbers, electricians....etc etc....
there are more jobs than just teachers that depend on the school vote...

very true!
Students especially. Also, some people get upset about having to pay school taxes even though they dont have children in the school, but just remember, if you've already had children pass through the district, they benefitted from it, and if not, one day you might have children who will benefit from it!

Lets not forget the kids who are kept out of afterschool programs and sports teams because budgets aren't passed. They are the first ones that people complain are hanging around making trouble - whether they are or not. Kids need a place to go after school to make them well-rounded individuals. These programs are usually the first to go when budgets are not passed. My mother hasnt had a child in school since 1988, she is a senior citizen with a mortgage that was finished well over 20 years ago and she STILL votes for every budget.

I always vote YES!
People forget that your house values also depend on passing school budgets b/c it makes your area more desireable to live in... so your house is worth more!
Children should be the reason why you vote yes!!!! If you can't do that b/c you are selfish, then vote yes for the reason I mentioned above. We ALL benefit form school budgets passing in some way!

Re: PLEASE VOTE FOR SCHOOL BUDGETS ON TUES!!!
Hate to be the one to play devil's advocate because I know how well people can blast if you don't agree --- but we pay 10K a year for MacArthur HS district. Unfortunately, I don't think most of the $$ winds up getting to our kids -- it goes to the high-paid administrators and staff -- the ones who are there to keep an eye on the ones who are keeping an eye on the ones who are keeping an eye on the teachers. The $$ should go directly to the school programs and the kids, not the superintendents and their lackeys.
So sad that the kids are the first to suffer....when getting rid of some middle-management adminsitrator job would return the $$ needed for some of the programs cancelled when taxes are voted down.

I agree with you. I think some major educational reform needs to come down from the state. They need to clearly spell out the order that things go in - and admin stuff should be first! Unfortunately though, that is not realistic in the present day.
Personally, I believe that school districts need to be more closely monitored! Some have budgets that rival large corporations, yet they are only bound by very loose rules.

Re: PLEASE VOTE FOR SCHOOL BUDGETS ON TUES!!!
I will vote yes.
HOWEVER, after hearing story after story of nepotism in hiring practices, I am NOT a fan of how most school districts are run. IMO, the best should get the job, not the most well-connected. And unfortunately that's not always the case. Great teachers/social workers/guidance counselors wait years and years to find a job, but someone well connected doesn't have those issues. From what I've heard, it's much worse than in any other sector, esp on LI. But I wouldn't want to see programs cut, so I'll vote yes.

Welcome to the real world this happens EVERYWHERE to be honest...
AND to be fair about it...it is much harder to do in the SD than other places...
so i wouldn't make nepatism the make or break issue
ETA..voting down a budget really has no effect on any nepatism that happens...
in just HURTS those that got the job without it

Yes, it happens everywhere, but IMO nowhere like the SDs. And I've heard from several people who are involved in hiring at districts all across LI that LI has a horrible reputation of not having fair hiring practices.

Re: PLEASE VOTE FOR SCHOOL BUDGETS ON TUES!!!
When budgets fail, taxes still go up considerably, and it is the students that suffer. Even with all the failures across the Island last year, I am not sure that any "message" was sent to Albany. Having student taught in a district without a budget, I can see firsthand the way the students suffer when the budget fails and I cannot be the one to do that to them. IMO, a society has the responsibility to educate their youth and I am proud to vote, yes, to do so. School systems are far from perfect but so is everything else in life. To make kids suffer for that does not seem fair to me.

very true!!! in our district the difference between the regular budget and austerity is less than $.35 a day! when you break it down like that - it really is a shame. you can bet that property values are going to go down a lot more than that after a few years on austerity!

As far as I've heard, Levittown has the highest paid supt in the state and I know their teacher salaries are pretty high - one of the highest on LI!

i am really not going to bother debating the nepatism aspect of the SD's.
But again....this factor really shouldn't weigh into wether people should or should not vote for the budget.
Nepatism is going to occur everywhere...
Voting down a budget will infact do the complete opposite of your desired want. It will take away jobs from those that probably earned it fair and square...Those people that rightfully deserve their job. THOSE are the people who will have to deal with the consequences of a failded budget...
NOT those that were hired by favoritism.
Maybe you should attend more counsel meeting and town meetings to get your message across...
