Re: Plus-size and pregnant
I am not plus sized but my good friend was and her doctor told her before she was ttc to lose about 40lbs.. She actually took the doctors advice.. Excess weight while pregnant can up your chances for gestational diabetes..that is why doctors are usually concerned...
Good luck when you start trying

Re: Plus-size and pregnant
I'm not overweight but my friend was when she was pregnant. She wasn't trying, but she got pregnant anyway so she obviously didn't have time to loose the weight beforehand. Her Dr. told her not to gain any weight during her pregnancy and watched her weight and gestational diabetes very closely throughout her pregnancy. He had given her a diet to follow too. Near the end, she had slight complications where they had to monitor her more closely but it never actually went into gestational diabetes.

Re: Plus-size and pregnant
I am about 20 lbs over my "optimal weight" and I am working on losing it. I had surgery recently and just got the all clear to return to exercising so about 5 of those pounds are a recent addition.

Re: Plus-size and pregnant
I want to lose weight before we actually start TTC. But in the meantime I'm working out, eating healthy and developing healthy habits that I haven't had and taking vitamins to prepare.
There are a lot of complications with being over weight. Gestational diabetes is one mentioned already. With that you may have to give yourself insulin injections and I'd rather not take any medications. Also, if youhave GD you and your baby are at an increased risk of diabetes post pregnancy.
There's also pre-eclampsia which I believe has to do with blood pressure and seizures.
I'd probably be pregnant if it weren't for these extra pounds but I'm working on it and this next year I invest in myself will also be an investment in my family's life. And in the meantime I lurk here and occasionally post questions.
FM me if you ever want to talk because we are in the same boat.

Re: Plus-size and pregnant
Thanks ladies, I have to start trying to take better care of myself. Since we got married I got lazy and let myself go. Time to get back on track for me and our soon to be baby.

Re: Plus-size and pregnant
because you are plus sized doesn't mean you will be guaranteed to have issues either conceiving or carrying a baby. I am plus sized!
what it meant for me:
it took us 6 months to conceive (my doctor never ONCE mentioned my weight).
i tested positive very early for GD (because of my family history i was tested early - it's on both sides of my family - again - NOT a weight thing - just luck of the draw).
i didn't 'show' like all the other pregnant women. i'm not kidding - unless you KNEW me - you didn't know i was pregnant. because of the GD (gestational diabetes) diet, i gained exactly 2 pounds with my pregnancy and when i had emma - i lost 32 pounds.
you never know what is in the 'dice' for you with your size & conception and pregnancy....it's all a crap shoot!
if you have any personal ?? or any other questions - feel free to FM me!!! i've always said my life is an open book!

Re: Plus-size and pregnant
I am plus size and TTC. I did lose 50 pounds before we started TTC, but I still have a lot of weight to lose. I did talk to my doctor about it and he had no concerns. He said if I eat right, it's very possible I could end up losing weight while PG, as well as with breastfeeding.
I am concerned about being PG, only because I have major back issues that I am afraid will become worse with being PG. I'm worried I could end up on bed rest. But I spoke to my Orthopedic Surgeon and OB/GYN and both gave me the go ahead.
I figure many plus size woman get PG and give birth every year. I trust my docs.

Re: Plus-size and pregnant
I was plus sized prior to my pregancy and I am still afterwards. I had no problems getting pregnant or during my pregancy. I was very lucky that I had such an easy pregnancy. I am trying to lose weight now before I have my next baby.
I lost 15 lbs in my first trimester because of morning sickness. Overall, I gained very little through my pregnancy. At my 6 week post partum check up, I was actually lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight.

Re: Plus-size and pregnant
I worry about all of the above. I don't want complications or diseases, and I want people to see that I am pregnant
I am eating better and trying to cut down on the caffeine. We are getting a Wii and Wii fit plus for Christmas, so I WILL be exercising!!!

I'm trying to lose the weight before we start TTC but I know plenty of overweight women that didn't have any problems at all.
