PODS - what do you know?

I would be putting my stuff in there, then moving it to a new home and leaving it in the driveway. My question is...
Aren't there other companies out there that compete against them?
Have you ever moved a POD or just left it in your driveway? If you moved it, how safe is it that the furniture doesn't go tumbling over?
how much is it monthly for a "house" sized container... meaning i can fit my house in it.
Did you have a bad experience that i should know about?

sorry for all the questions!!

Re: PODS - what do you know?

I would not let them take it

I have heard a few stories about expensive items- like flat screen TVs disapearing from the place were they store the PODS

you should be ok if you keep it on your property

That is how we moved OOS. I think the whole thing with insurance of up to $5K was about $800.
The drop it off to you and then that starts your first month. I only needed it for a month. The largest one isn't really huge so it depends on how big and how much stuff you have. We had a 4 bedroom split level with 2 bedrooms set, livingroom, dining table but that came apart and A LOT of boxes. I want to say that 90% of stuff fit. Nothing budged I mean we stuffed as much as we could. Nothing broke and we bought a lock. Then we called them and they picked it up and stored it for us. We needed to call about a week before we wanted it delievered so that is what we did and they put it in the drive way for you. When we arrived it was waiting for it. It was great. The POD was so clean. My parents used one but not POD brand when they renovated and it wasn't nearly as clean and off the ground.

Nope not at all. It is actually flat beded and it is prety neat how they get it up (they use chains). We had our plasma in their and no problems.

Re: PODS - what do you know?

I was looking around at the Town of Islip website looking at what does and doesn't need permits (I'm in the middle of building...), and I found out that in the TOI you need to have a permit to have one of those PODS on your yard.... I doubt anyone in the town knows about that. I know I didn't....

Re: PODS - what do you know?

my SIL used one and had a great experience. She moved from Suffolk to Buffalo and everything arrived without a problem.

ETA: the POD people stored it for a month while she was between places and living with my MIL.

Re: PODS - what do you know?

My parents used it when they moved and had no problems.

They took the PODS from thier old house....stored them for about 5 months and then had them brought to the new house.

My mom bought her own locks and locked them up. I really dont think you have to worry about anyone "stealing" your stuff. Just dont advertise what you have in it,,,,then you will lesson the temptation for anyone to want to go into yours! Chat Icon

Re: PODS - what do you know?

I had a great experience too, we had some shifting but that was my husband's fault in the way he stacked things. We learned to use the height of the Pod as well as the width and length. We stood our mattresses up on end to make more room and they fit the height just fine.

I called the Long Beach city hall first to make sure I didn't need a special permit. They said as long as it was off the street, it was fine. I had them put it on my lawn, not my driveway, which wasn't long enough.

When the guy came to pick it up, I realized my deadbeat neighbor had parked right in the way of the truck. Even though I had asked him not to.

It was amazing, how the driver fit into a spot I would never even try to put my car in! It had rained the night before so he put down plywood so he wouldn't dig up the lawn.

All in all, a great experience. It was nice to know we could take our time packing it. We needed all of that time too! We underestimated how much crap we had - we thought we would have room to spare. We didn't! And we were only moving a 2 bedroom apartment.
