Police in pursuit of pit bull in Merrick, 3 schools on lockdown

Cops say they are in pursuit of a pit bull on Ott Street in Merrick that is believed to be involved in last week's attack. Old Mill Road, Brookside and Fayette elementary schools are on lockdown.

I just got this update from news12

This is so sad. I am incredibly sorry for what happened to the woman, but my heart is breaking for what is about to happen to the dog that was wronged by its owners Chat Icon

I hope this is over soon and everyone stays safe.

Re: Police in pursuit of pit bull in Merrick, 3 schools on lockdown

It definitely sucks all around but if the dog is vicious, it has to be put down.

And I've rescued two PBs so it's not like I don't absolutely adore the breed.

Super sad.

Yeah I *just* got home from picking my kids up- regular dismissal time is 2:40. There were three helicopters circling the school before they finally let us in the gym. I'm guessing they got the dog otherwise they wouldn't have let the kids out.

That explains all of the police all over the Meadowbrook Rd and SS parkway earlier.... ESU, BSU, and at least 4 different precincts there..

Re: Police in pursuit of pit bull in Merrick, 3 schools on lockdown

This seems to be the second or third instance involving pitbulls in the past week. Now, I am a dog lover, however, it is obvious these dogs have been bred to be viscious and it's an innate desire within them. I do not think they should be in peoples' homes, period. I know many do not agree but that is just my opinion. I am not here to debate anyone, I have heard it all before. The fact of the matter is I love people more than dogs. It kind of reminds me of people keeping wild animals, with the owner they are ok, but let them out and their instincts take over. I am not sure of the solution, but the fact that my child could be in danger due to a KILLER animal makes my blood boil. I am not sure of the solution, but something needs to be done.

ETA: Article from this past weekend:
Wake tomorrow for Fairfield toddler

(10/04/11) FAIRFIELD - A Fairfield mother is looking for answers and help after her toddler was mauled to death by pit bulls.
The grandfather of 21-month-old Nevaeh Angel Bryant says she went to stay with her aunt in West Haven Friday while her mother was helping a friend move and she was mauled by the dogs inside the apartment.

She died at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Authorities say the pit bulls were euthanized.

A wake has been scheduled for tomorrow night at Spear-Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Her funeral will be held Thursday morning at Our Lady of Assumption Church.

Friends and family have set up a fund for donations to help Navaeh's mother pay for the arrangements.

I will not address your opinion on the breed itself as I know nothing good will come from it but I wanted to address this comment so you're informed.

The dog they're looking for now, IS the same dog from the incident that happened this past week with the 62 year old woman.

One of the two dogs got away and this is THAT dog.

I just got stuck on Meadowbrook Rd taking one of my "shortcuts" home b/c the SSP was backed up. I figured they were either pursuing the dog or had caugt it. There were lots of cops, news vans and a helicopter overhead. I hope they caught it do that no one else gets hurt.

The truth is, since it is a Town of Hempstead dog, it will go to the troubled Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. I don't want to get into detail about what will be the last moments of this dog's life but it will be anything BUT humane. Don't get me wrong, what this poor woman had to endure is horrific but I must speak out about this "shelter." I am an animal advocate and member of Hope for Hempstead Shelter. We are trying to reform the shelter so that even dogs like this pit get treated humanely. If you are an animal lover, please join me and be a voice for our homeless shelter pets. The website hopeforhempsteadshelter.com is very helpful in finding out more information about the Town of Hempstead Animal "Shelter" and there is also a Facebook page - Hope for Hempstead Shelter - which is also informative.

As everyone said I feel sorry for the woman but i believe the owner's of the dog are responsible too.

Pit bulls are not the only dogs that can bite. My grandparents have a shih tzu who is 16 years old and she has been biting since she was born. I blame part of it on my grandparents who do not disclipline her. So because of this I believe every dog can turn and you have to be careful.

I have to say I am shocked by how many people feel sorry for this dog. DO this may people feel sorry for a violent rapist, murderer or even a mom who drove the wrong way on the Taconic. I admit it, I want this dog out of my neighborhood and I do not care how they do it.

I had a similar thought. I don't feel sorry for this dog, and I'm glad it will be off the streets.

Well, I feel bad for this puppy. I am so sad that they had to be raised by irresponsible owners and die in such a horrific way. I don't blame them for their actions nor do I blame the poor woman who was the victim. I would love to find the owners, bite them, and then have them shot.

Not the same IMO. People have brains, thought process skills of rationalization, consequences, etc and choices they make in life. Animals DONT. They go by instincts only. Big difference.

I am glad it will be off the streets too, but that doesnt mean I dont feel bad it has to be shot to death, etc.

ITA. This dog has probably known nothing but violence in its life. My puppy was abused as well. Skin and bones when we rescued her. She is the sweetest dog I have ever known and it breaks my heart to think she could have ended up like this dog.

Well if you say the dogs got a bad rap because of how they were brought up you could say the same for humans really...

Exactly, most violent criminals had a bad upbringing. And I do believe dogs can think to some extent. My dog follows my kids around and understands at least 25 words including both my kids names. He is a good dog, yea he jumps on my table and steals food then barks his head off half the day driving me nuts. But hey, these are minor offenses for a dog. He has never bitten a soul, not even a nip. And he has not tried to take off a finger never mind an arm. I am sorry but I do think some dogs are just violent and they are less important to me than a human who is violent because they are just a dog. I love my dog, but people come first. IMO
