Policy on requesting a day off at work.
How does it work where you work? At my office I have to give at least two weeks notice. Ok, fine. Here is my problem/confusion. I gave my boss 1 MONTH NOTICE in order to go to my sisters wedding this month. She still hasnt "ok'd" it. This is not new, she always waits until the last min. to ok any day off. My question is, when you put in your request for the day off ( and you have days in the bank/vacation time) is it saying, "Heres my request for my day off so start looking for a relacement that day" or "Here is my request off for X day. Now I'll wait for you to ok it or not"? What is the policy at your job? Keep in mind my place of employment only has 2 employees (and thats with me included )

Not going to your sister's wedding isn't an option (at least to me it wouldn't be). I'd send a reminder
"I know I sent you this last month but just as a reminder my sister's wedding is on x date and I will not be in that day."
Our policy at work (I'm in HR) is that you should give as much notice in requesting a day off. Generally, I request vacation days. Otherwise for non-negotiable days, I send an email along the lines of "I need to take x day as a vacation day" - and consider it approved - and if it wasn't, I'd take it as unpaid.

We are supposed to submit our request through our time management software. We have to use or lose our vacation each year so there is an unwritten policy that pretty much all time off requests will be approved. It would have to be an unusual extenuating circumstance for a request to be denied.
In your shoes, I'd follow up with a reminder that you will be out that day.

Oh, trust me. I will be taken the day off weather she approves it or not! She can get ****** off all she wants. I am not missing my sis' wedding for anything. I just think this policy is ridiculus. I feel if you have personal/vacation days and you put in the request to have it off it should be considered approved once its submitted but not in my case. I cant submit a reminder letter because she takes offense to it as this has been dont before. It doesnt matter I guess, I will NOT be there that day.

I cant submit a reminder letting her know I wont be in because she takes offense to it. She once told me that I cannot say I wont be in and that I have to wait for an approval first...she told me this THE DAY BEFORE I requested off..I mean what the heck! I told her, well, when were you going to approval this if its the day before I need off and you havent mentioned anything to me yet!

Gees, you are between a rock and a hard place. I can't stand people that abuse their authority like that. She really has no right to leave you hanging like that but of course you know that. Has she ever denied a time off request?

No, she hasnt. I dont think she will deny this one either my only problem is exactly what you stated..abuse of authority. She leaves me hanging until the very last minute and I think its really unfair. Honestly, if she denys this request I will quit...

We need to put it in through a computer program at least 2 weeks early. But my boss is great, sometime something comes up the week before and she is always very accomodating...

My company's policy is if we need a day off, we email everyone and let them know. Usually we say why. It can be anytime, but I guess the earlier the better. It helps that my company has 8 people and its entire mission is to help other companies work smarter (including treating employees like adults and giving them time off if they need it).

I email my bosses with my request usually a few weeks in advance.
And I save the response so I can remind them that they approved it on such and such date.

If its one day, I can usually request it the day before, as long as my work is done or arrangements have been made in my dept to complete it.
For a week, I we usually have to give about a month's notice. We're rarely denied unless pretty much the whole dept is already out that week.

For personal days, we need to file a form with our supervisor at least 3 days in advance. We do not have to say why we are requesting the day and they must approve it (according to our contract).

i luckily get to make my schedule each month. so if i need a day off, i just dont schedule that day to work.

In my office very often the written request gets filled out after the fact. We do have an actual policy of having your immediate supervisor approve it, but then it goes to accounting to make sure you have days left AND they are supposed to check and make sure the unit is not left without coverage for the day, but that never happens.

at my office, I think as long as they have the pto hrs and coverage isn't an issue, they don't care. She should respond to you within a couple of days. I'd speak to her in person.

I cant. I once did this and she got upset and said, "You cant take the day off until I ok it" and I said, well when did you plan on oking it? The day before I needed it off?
