depends. Usually I give the same except for:

1 couple who I knew had NO money. We gave them a much larger gift when they got married.

Another couple was obnoxious at our wedding and cost us money in OT on our limos. We subtracted that amount from what we gave them

Re: Poll about gifts...

we used to give what we could afford, now that we are married, we noticed we received less from more then a few people then we gave, so now we did kinda fall into the give what we got category...But we have only been to 2 weddings since we got married...for both we gave what we got, and it was almost equal to what we could afford...we could have give a little bit more...We also didnt because we knew both weddings cost a lot lot less then ours so we knew we did the "covered our plates and more " bit already

Re: Poll about gifts...

just wanted to throw in:

We also received LESS from one couple than we gave them 3 years earlier. My MIL said they're broke. I guess I'm more upset because the wife no-showed, too.

I was surprised at the people who gave us back THE SAME that we gave them YEARS ago. When we were in college, we always gave $200, despite being broke. I was surprised to see that some successful couples gave us back that $200.

I saved all my cards! I wrote on the back of each one, what our gift was. If a someone came to my wedding alone, and DH and I eventually go to thiers, we double the gift or may add a little more, since weve been married a while now.

Considering I had one cousin and his wife give me $50. and his brother and his wife give me a check for $200, have it bounce so that DH and I were charged $20., then when I called him about it he lied to me and said he was balancing 5 checkbooksChat Icon and he mailed another one out only a few days before... FUNNY IT'S BEEN THREE WEEKS AND NO F-ING CHECKChat Icon Chat Icon My cheap a$$ family is getting @#$% from me now. So it cost me the price pp plus $20. to invite my cousin and his wife.

Oh, and my own brother stiffed us and gave a speech that crossd the line. He's getting a regift for X-mas.

Everyone else usually what they gave me. I was apparently way too generous in the past and it was never appreciated.

Re: Poll about gifts...

I give what I can. I think it's petty and ridiculous to give someone a certain amount bc that's what they gave you once upon a time. What's the point in giving gifts if they end up canceling each other out?

So you would honestly give a well off couple that gave you $100 at your wedding $250 + the next year or so at their wedding???

If that's what I could afford to give - Yes. I make it a point never to make assumptions on other people's finances. I don't balance their checkbook nor do I live with them, so I will truly never know what the person has going on in their personal life.

Re: Poll about gifts...

We always give what we can afford, BUT we also never would give less than what was given to us, does that make sense? Like, now that we're married, and I know I have friends' weddings coming up, I will make damn sure to give at least what they gave us. We have some friends who really have no money, and we know they gave us as much as they could possibly afford, however, JT and I will probably give them a lot more for their wedding for two reasons: one, we can afford more, and two, I know they are really just starting out and could use the money more than JT and I needed it after our wedding. Not that it has anything to do with our wedding, but their our friends, and we like to be as generous as possible.Chat Icon

I would give what they gave me unless I was suddenly in a much better financial situation where I could afford to give more. That is all I would expect (if you can even say expect - because I wouldn't really expect anything) from them.
