POLL: Health Insurance Out Of Pocket Costs
Please take my poll. I'm looking for cost per person, not for a full family. Also, for medical insurance only...no dental, vision, etc.
TIA.

Re: POLL: Health Insurance Out Of Pocket Costs
my Option isnt on the poll, FH owns his own business and he pays for all his employees health benefits. They do not have to put in at all. He also pays mine as well, i work with him.

Re: POLL: Health Insurance Out Of Pocket Costs
My employer used to pay entirely, untill about 2003) but now I think it's about $40/month for 1 person. There is some discrepency as to weather the dental is free or included in that number.
I use DH's which is about $30 for 2 people. It's not much more than the 1 person fee.

Family plan is free for DH's plan.(Local#3/IBEW)
Family plan would be $75/month if I opted for it with my plan (I don't). For the employee only, it's free. (Software company)

Re: POLL: Health Insurance Out Of Pocket Costs
Zero. The Australian government pays for full medical. I have private health insurance that covers dental and eye glasses for $50 a month for my husband and me.

Re: POLL: Health Insurance Out Of Pocket Costs
The premiums are about $80/mo but the out of pockets costs for me are about $120/month including co-pays and medicine.
Think of it on a yearly basis and how much your co-pays will be for regular docs and specialists. I pay $20 for a regular doc and $30/visit for a specialist.

Re: POLL: Health Insurance Out Of Pocket Costs
Many single plans are free or a nominal fee.
The out of pocket costs can really escalate when you have a family plan as most employers make you pick up a considerable percentage.
It's also important to consider the flexibility and acceptance of the plan. For example, my plan the co-pays are still pretty low compared to many other companies. On DH's plan, we will be paying a $60 (X2) co-pay each time one of our children needs to go in for a routine well visit. His prescription plan isn't any better. If I decide to take an extra year leave from teaching, we will have to be on his plan but mine is much better. You also want a plan that is widely acceptable by doctors, as you want to be able to go where the best care is. No one thinks they will have to face this issue but both myself and my father have in the last ten years.
This is THE ISSUE that is keeping my school district from settling a contract with the teachers. Ten years ago many of us were single and the costs were much lower. Things do eventually change, many of us have families or on-going health issues and expenses are increasing. A higher salary rarely makes up for it. If you check your health insurance statements you will see the real cost of routine treatments (what you would have to pay if you did not have coverage) is staggering. I have to get a sonogram for every OB visit.... that alone is $600!!! Imagine paying that out of pocket every two weeks and now every week?
The district's latest offer was a 3% raise and for us to pay well over 25% of our insurance. With numbers like that I'd be rolling back my salary to at least 1998 We are already at the bottom fifth in pay of all districts on LI. Hence, picketing has started.
This is why my original post on your other thread stressed benefits so much.
Fifteen years ago my father very much saw the future when he pulled me aside and said, "What will separate the have's vs. the have nots in your generation is not $$$ but access to health care." It's only in the last few years do I realize how right he was.
Just make sure you weigh everything very carefully and definitely account for the unwelcomed and unexpected.

Same here... and we didn't include maternity... we have to add it next year for baby #2. We pay 520.00 a mo. plus co-pays and RX co-pays.

Re: POLL: Health Insurance Out Of Pocket Costs
I clicked on 1-50 which by mistake. That is what it was to cover me on DH's but it really is 100-150 to cover both of us for medical/dental/prescription/vision

Re: POLL: Health Insurance Out Of Pocket Costs
$142/month just for me, but the plan includes meager dental ($5 cleaning, $15 xrays, etc.)
Its a lot, but its still cheaper than a healthy NY plan or paying privately.

Do you know what the contributions are for teachers in nearby districts? That seems like a huge contribution for teachers. Teachers in my state don't pay anywhere near that amount.
Both DH and my health insurance contributions are low. However, neither of our employers contribute much towards health care coverage for dependents. That's why I'm on my employer's plan and he's on his employer's plan. When we have kids, we'll have to figure out which plan is better based on our contribution, co-pays and coverage.

Re: POLL: Health Insurance Out Of Pocket Costs
We pay 180 a month for the 2 of us, and this is through my job, as my husband's job does not offer insurance yet.
In response to Tah-Wee-Zah's comment about being careful with who accepts it, etc, its not easy to be picky about health insurance. I work for a very large corporation, based out of Georgia, and our health insurance is through a company widely known out in the South, but not in the Northeast. I am glad I have ANY coverage, and in all of my encounters with medical issues, have always been given the best care, regardless of who my health care provider was.

Sorry to hijack but to answer this...
The offer made by our board is significantly lower than neighboring districts and other districts that produce the same test results that we do with comparable tax structures. It does nothing but send us back financially and it is completely insulting to us as professionals. It is causing a huge problem with morale and many experienced teachers are looking elsewhere. What the board doesn't understand is that they are only hurting the school district and the quality of education in the long run. Even if it's settled tomorrow, it will take several years to recover.
