polyscystic ovarian syndrome
What can anyone tell me about it? Did you have a hard time getting pregnant because of it?

Re: polyscystic ovarian syndrome
I am not pregnant and have never been... sorry to hijack your board girls.
I do have PCOS and we think my deceased mother had PCOS because it took her 5 years to conceive me.
I always knew there was a problem as I am anovulatory. I would, maybe get my periods every four months or so. I chart my BBT and they look like EKG readings, there are not patterns that you tend to see in regular cycles. In 2005, I ovulated once (July) and believe I had a chemical pregnancy.
I started to see an RE last September. She treated me with Clomid and Prednisone (my new RE does not recommend prednisone) and it took them 3 cycles and 150mg to get me to ovulate one egg. The way it has been explained to me is that the insulin in my body (and you don't have to be diabetic in order for this to happen) is overriding my reproductive hormones causing my ovaries to be "lazy". There are eggs in there it's just that my insulin needs to be brought down so my hormones can be at their proper levels and I can ovulate.
I recently switched RE's (I do not recommend my old RE practice at all... long story) and currently see Dr. Rosenfeld who is the chief of the Center for Human Reproduction at HSUH.
You really need to be under the care of an RE who is experienced in PCOS. It was hard for me to realize too but I'm not like normal women. At age 35, I have virtually no chance of getting pregnant on my own due to my condition. Please check your health insurance and speak to your ob/gyn about a referral to an RE. Even if you have to fib about how long you have been trying, just do it.
I think back to what my mother had to go through and I'm amazed. It was back in the late 1960's... no OPK's, no HPT, really no RE's. She tried for 5 years to get pregnant and everytime she didn't get her period she must have thought she was... but she was annovulatory. She finally did get PG with me and then that pregnancy jump started her system and she was regular from then on.
You will get PG it's just going to take more work than most girls... a least Clomid and IUI's.
You may want to join us on the Infertility board as there are several women who have PCOS.
Good luck
