Poopy Question (TMI)
Noah was going regularly in hospital etc about 3 times a day.
NOW he seems to be straining to go, pushes so hard and gets so mad trying to go and We get little bits ( size of a penny maybe) all day ( 3-4 times) and then usually one larger amount eventully...But it seems so Thick...almost stuck in his bottom still...
I feel like it should be looser?
IS this something to worry about? Normal? I cant find any info on it.
TIA!!!!

Re: Poopy Question (TMI)
You need to check more the consistency of the poop rather than frequency..if it is very hard, or pellet like, the baby is constipated and you can add an ounce of water here and there to the bottles...or a teaspoon of prune juice to every third bottle.
If the consistency is fine, he's not constipated, this happens with formula fed babies, exactly what happened with my son. He may go once a day, once every other day or a little bit here and there.
It can be frustrating but as long as he's not screaming and crying as he's going, its all good!
**edited to add-as the digestive system matures, it slows down so you can expect less frequent poops!

Re: Poopy Question (TMI)
This would happen to Ava, but it would come out so dry that it was ashy. But she was on prescription formula that was pre-digested. Sometimes the iron in the formula can constipate them. My ped. always told me to give Ava an ounce or two of water a day inbetween feedings, but I would check with your ped. before doign that. That did the trick for us, though

Re: Poopy Question (TMI)
I'm not sure when you can start them on water, Ava was 8 weeks old when we started her. I am sure you can give it to him, I would just check the amount that you can give him. I always felt like giving her water was so much gentler on her than prune juice.

Re: Poopy Question (TMI)
I would think he might be constipated. I'm not sure if its normal for a baby that young to be straining to go. I'm pretty sure the consistency should be liquidy, not think like paste.
My kids are breastfed, but I've never seen them have to try so hard when they were little.

I've always read that it is normal for newborns to strain. Maybe that is only formula fed babies though
My DS would strain and kick his legs, but he was going and that was the important part. I read that it is just them getting used to "going" and it was their digestive systems also getting used to whatt hey were eating. And his was always pasty and sticky and smelled like grain.
I also think formula fed babies go more often then breastfed babies, but again, I could be wrong.

Re: Poopy Question (TMI)
I used to give Steven water (and still do) as a newborn. As long as you don't replace a feeding and only give 1 or 2 oz at a time (he probably won't even drink THAT much). It helps, but it is not going to solve the problem forever.
As a PP said, some docs tell you to add prune juice. I would maybe think of changing his formula. If that doesn't work, then I would mention it to the doctor.

Oh, well I didn't know that! I thought all little babies had liquidy poops, I never thought that a FF fed baby would have pastey poops, I had always thought that was only when they started solids. You learn something new everyday.

Re: Poopy Question (TMI)
Honestly, it sounds FINE! I woudn't call the doctor. Thick and pastey is 100% normal!!
If it is rock hard or looks like adult poop (logs, sorry to be gross..) that is when its constipation. Everything else is normal.

Re: Poopy Question (TMI)
Just a tip... the morning of your appt, don't throw out his poopy diaper. Wrap it and bag it. Bring it to the dr, offer if, if dr declines, that's fine.
I have had to drop off my share of dirty diapers...its an extra trip. So much easier to just bring the stool sample in with you, it saves you the trip to the dr.

I was just going to tell you to do the same thing.

Re: Poopy Question (TMI)
Ah the joys of BFing -- we get the projectile streams!!!
Donna I read you can put a drop of vaseline on his butthole (sorry to be so graphic) and this will help with the straining problem....
