Poor Cat...
This morning I left the house to go to the gym and when I came out of the garage I heard moaning from where our garbage cans are next to the garage door. Then, I saw the cat who lives across the street (he is outside, but the people across the street feed him) - he was laying on his side.
When I got closer, I saw that he had clumps of fur missing all over. His chest was almost totally bald. Then, when I came around I saw that his ENTIRE right side was just one big, open wound - all bloody. He had been attacked and left for dead by another animal. I was so sad and upset about this. I immediately called my Vet who put me in touch with a non-kill shelter right near my house (Grateful Paw Cat Haven) - I drove there and they made a call to a Vet they work with who could take care of the cat with no cost to me. I was a little concerned because I got stuck footing the bill once when I rescued a feral cat who had been hit by a car. He, being feral, attacked me (several bites) - so, a costly trip to the ER for me and then the bill from the Vet for him needing to be put to sleep.
This time, the shelter recommended a Vet in Greenlawn on Broadway - very nice people. I took him there and he was so bad that I was worried he was going to die in my car on the way. When we got there - the vet helped me get him out (I had him in my dog's crate) - he couldn't even walk into the crate, I had to scrape him up off the ground using a towel and then I had to place him in the crate. The Vet said it was one of the worst attacks he had ever seen. He gave him immediate pain medication so that he would fall to sleep and be comfortable -- then, he said he had to put him down. The cat is definitely older - around 12ish - but this is no way to die.
I came home and went across the street to leave a note for the lady that has fed him for years. I told her to give me a call - I feel bad because her kids always play with him. I wish I could have done more for him but at least he is no longer suffering. Thank God I came out of my house when I did - he would have died there.

Re: Poor Cat...
I just got a call from the Vet Asst. She said she would call me just to let me know what the Vet said in the overall evaluation and then subsequent euthanization. She said he fell to sleep after the pain meds and was definitely feeling "comfortable" because he was able to stop moaning and fall off. Then, the Vet put him down. The Vet did say, which made me feel better, that the cat would have laid on my driveway and suffered for a long time before finally passing away from the injuries. So, that made me feel a little better knowing that me finding him and taking him to be put down stopped him from having to suffer for an extended amount of time.
The Vet said he thinks it was another cat that did it.

God this is so awful. I'm crying just reading it (I'm ultra sensitive to cats). But thank God you found it and did the right thing to help end it's suffering. It must have been so upsetting to witness.

Dani...you are an angel. I am crying as i read this....
Are you sure an animal did this? There is no way it was a sick person, is there?
Poor poor baby, he was suffering so much.
You my dear, have such strength it is commendable.

Poor poor baby, he was suffering so much.

The doctor looked at the wounds and said it was most likely a cat -- he said he could tell by the bite and scratch marks. I had asked since I was worried it may have been a raccoon.
You can tell it was definitely an animal attack though - not of the human kind. I felt bad calling the people that feed him - she was so sad!

I want to go home and hug my kitties now.
You're an angel for taking care of that kitty, and i'm sure you saved him hours of agony. Good for you for doing the right thing. Thank you from another pet owner.. just the thought of it is getting me upset.

ITA with all of this. You are such an awesome person for saving him from suffering
My sister's cat was attacked by a neighbor's dog, in much the same manner. They wound up having to put him to sleep, too My gut tells me that it could have been a raccoon--my mom's cat was attacked by a raccoon and left for dead, and my mom found the cat underneath the bushes in the morning

Re: Poor Cat...
You did a very kind and generous thing by taking him in. Although it's incredibly sad that he had to be put down, you saved him countless hours of suffering, etc.

What a horrible story!!! This truly breaks me heart.
It was so good of you to care for him and bring him to the vet. At least he didn't suffer for quite as long as he could have.

Re: Poor Cat...
You are a true angel for doing that...not many people would have.
Another reason why I am so against people who let their cats run loose (I know this sitaution is different)...it is just not safe.

Re: Poor Cat...
That is so sad...and honestly, the main reason why we keep our cat indoors. I don't think I could take the heartbreak of having to deal with an injury like that.
Kudos to you for taking care of him and putting him out of his misery.
