Poor Lexie!
We had a rough night...I thought her diarrhea was getting better, but last night it was AWFUL. She was having massive diarrhea every 10 minutes for HOURS and she wouldn't eat or drink anything. We were up most of the night with her, but she was acting normal and fine.
This morning the diarrhea was bloody and we were scared. Since DH had to work, I ran (with my 3 and 1 year olds in tow) to the vet in my pajama shirt and jeans and no makeup on. (i've NEVER done that, lol) They were very worried too, so they took me right away, no wait whatsoever. We had the top specialist check her out and they tested the stool sample I brought. Surprisingly she is not dehydrated at all.
He is treating her for a certain type of parasite, because even though the sample was negative, he said it was a tricky one to see under a microscope...so she may be infected anyway. He also gave me special food to feed her over the next few days, and meds for 5 days.
We (the vet and I) think the diarrhea is a combo of the parasite AND being stressed out and nervous about being in a new home. Please pray that poor Lexie gets well soon. Thanks.

Re: Poor Lexie!
Whwn we first brought Luna home (she was a rescue) her digestive system was a MESS..... Not only did she still have worms (even though the shelter had dewormed her), she also had coccidia and giardia (both VERY difficult parasites for little puppies).
Kudos to you for getting her right to the vet- parasites can be deadly to a puppy. Hopefully the place you rescued her from will chip in for her treatment/vet bills (our local SPCA helped out with Luna's care).
Hope Lexi is feeling better soon!

Re: Poor Lexie!
Ugh- giardia is rough. Make sure you WASH your hands really well when cleaning up after her and throw away/sterilize ANYTHING that her poops came in contact with. Giardia is highly contagious- and humans can get it as well.
I'm glad she's responding to the meds- she'll be a crazy, wiggly puppy in no time....

Re: Poor Lexie!
so glad to hear she's feeling better!!!!
sophie was unbelievably sick when we first brought her home too... she didn't eat or drink for a week and at some points i really didn't think she was going to make it. it took a while to get rid of the kennel cough and the parasites, but then she did great!
totally agree with porrruss about giardia. be VERY careful with washing your hands and keeping your place as clean as possible. if you or anyone in your home start having any GI symptoms (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting), see your doctor because you may have gotten it.

Re: Poor Lexie!
Okay so now I am freaking out at the possibility that we are going to get infected too.
I had no idea it could be transmitted to humans...yikes!!

Don't worry. Denver had a bout and we were fine. Be sure to thoroughly clean up after her and wash your hand.

Re: Poor Lexie!
Giardia is so tricky!!!! Cooper JUST got over it after we had treated him for it several times thru out the year. Glas the meds are working (they smell nasty though right?!).
FYI-- be careful when you let Lexi out to poop... if she sniffs where she pooped when the Giardia wasn't being treated, the area can be infected and she can get infected again too. Like I said, it's a tricky little parasite.
Give her a treat for me!!

I'm pretty sure they get it from other dogs, or they are born with it if their mother had it... but I'm not 100% sure of that.
