Re: Port Jefferson Station
I live in Setauket, but on the border of PJS. There are some very nice sections, and some other so so sections.
Overall i think the area is great - close to port jeff village, tons of shopping. the only thing that stinks is that 347 gets very backed up in PJS near 112.

Re: Port Jefferson Station
I work in the area and a few friend live there. They are happy with the schools. My impression of the area, the neighborhood and homes are cute but the drive down Rt 112 isn't pleasing and the traffic is horrific and doesn't look well kept.

Re: Port Jefferson Station
I used to live in PJS. We lived North of 347 over by the Ward Mellville (sp) high school. I loved it over there. Its close to all shopping. The bad thing is the traffic on 347 during the week and the weekends. It would take me 30 - 40 mins to get to Hauppauge on an ok weather day. About 40 - 50 mins to get home.

Re: Port Jefferson Station
I live North of 347 also and 112 isn't bad at all, I take that straight down to North Ocean to work and can get there in 15, it's 347 that is horrible. The schools are small, good special ed. programs, close to downtown Port Jeff, close to beaches, taxes are reasonable. I don't like any of the grocery stores in the area so we have to travel further down 347 to get to the nicer Stop and Shop. We rent the house we live in, but hope to buy it eventually since I really like the area.

Re: Port Jefferson Station
I live in PJS now, and yes, although rte 347 can be a traffic jam - what road on LI is not?!
I live in a neighborhood adjacent to three village and I love it. I'd def. recommend it to anyone looking.
Yes, there are parts of PJS I'd avoid moving into, but that can be said of any major town on LI.
If you have any questions on a specific neighborhood or a house on MLSLI, feel free to FM any of us. We'd all be willing to offer our help/expertise.
Also, note that Terryville (historic) is also PJS!

Re: Port Jefferson Station
I grew up there. Its a pretty little town where kids still have lemonade stands and people keep their doors unlocked. Schools are small (I think the HS just broke 1000 students) but good. Lots of Honors/AP options for strong students, solid SpEd program for students that need extra support. Housng prices are reasonable - you get a lot of house and land for your money. Yes, 347 $uckS during rush hour, but ALL LI roads are terrible at that time. If you're commuting to NYC, you might want to look at other neighbrohoods - the train is LONG and infrequent. Best of luck!!!

Re: Port Jefferson Station
I grew up in a very tiny area of Coram that attended Comsewogue schools, 99% of my friends lived in PJS. I rented in PJS & Port Jeff village as an adult. I have fond memories of how rural it was in the early 70's & when I go over there now I feel so overwhelmed by the traffic. I've always known it to be an average middle class area. My memory of the school system is just ok.
