positive fetal fibronectin test...
So the dr. office just called me and told me that one of my test from yesterday came back positive for fetal fibronectin. She told me theres nothing they can do about it and its not really a bad thing but chances are im gonna have this baby early. So now i wonder.... should i be worried? Ill be 34 weeks tommrow, if shes born now would everything be ok or would she have to stay in the hospital longer? As much as i want this baby out i just want her to be healthy. The dr wasnt there so i couldnt ask any questions but they told me to call tomm if i had any. At work im on my feet a lot and it sometimes gets pretty stressful so should i stop working? What do u guys think?

The modwives I see don't stop labor once you pass 35 weeks... you are almost there so I wouln't worry! I also read that a positive ffn test does not mean yuo will definitely have the baby early but there is just a higher chance.

Same for the midwives I see. While 34 weeks is a bit early the baby would probably be just fine.

Re: positive fetal fibronectin test...
A negative FFN is reassuring and fairly accurate (something like 95% reliable) but when it's positive there is like a 60% chance(don't quote me on these numbers) that it could be a false positive result so it doesn't necessarily mean you'll be going into labor in the next 2 wks but of course the possiblity is there. If I were you I would stop working and take it easy. I'm suprised your Dr didn't suggest this. Nothing has been proven that bedrest can stop labor from happening but if you work on your feet that certainly won't help the situation either. While the baby will probably be fine if born now every extra day you can keep cooking this baby is better. In my hospital all babies born before 35wks will have to go to the NICU for sometime.

Re: positive fetal fibronectin test...
My girls were born at exactly 35 weeks to the day. They went to the NICU for observation b/c they were early..they went home a week after they were born..they stayed a week strictly b/c the doctor wanted to observe them and see how they were doing....

It's really tough leaving them...my eldest daughter was born at exactly 36 weeks and she went home with me....all girls were a nice size for their gestational age and had no issues..they just wanted to watch the 35 weekers a little closer.

Depends on a lot of factors. You are far enough that the serious problems are behind you but there might be minor issues that will keep that baby there past your stay in the hospital. Figure close to a week at minimum. However you are still pregnant and I'm assuming you're not feeling contractions right now so please don't start stressing about this right now it's not good for you or the baby. For all anyone nows you might go past your due date!!

Re: positive fetal fibronectin test...
I had a postitive FFN test at 27 weeks, and did not have my baby until 35.5 weeks.
Like another poster mentioned, a negative FFN test is much more accurate then a positive FFN test.
ETA: DD was born early - at 35.5 weeks - and did not need to be in the NICU!!

Re: positive fetal fibronectin test...
I would definitely call and speak with your dr. I don't think a + is 100% that you will go soon - but I do believe it means you will go early (I thought it meant you could go within 2 weeks). If you are on your feet a lot and concerned maybe you want to talk to your OB about going out on bed rest now.
As far as the NICU - it depends on a lot of factors - how early the baby is, their weight, how they are doing - are there any complications, eating well on their own etc.
I would try to take it easy and relax as much as you can - see if you can stop working now and rest.

Re: positive fetal fibronectin test...
i just got off the phone with the dr and she didnt seem too concerned. i asked her about me working and she said it was up to me. i think im gonna stop until at least next wed when they check me again and if everything seems ok maybe ill go back for a little but for the meantime i feel its best to take it easy. im 35w today so lets hope she stays in there for another week at the very least!
