possibly entering the real estate market soon... suffolk school district question
hi all I haven't posted on this board for a while... we ALMOST bought a house in port jeff a couple years ago, but then the inspection was and we decided to hold-off until we knew where DH's next job would be...
So, we found out recently that we're staying local , and would like to look for a home again. We're thinking western suffolk.... somewhere where both a NYC or stony brook commute wouldn't be too horrendous.
What school districts are good in suffolk / eastern nassau? I know half hollow hills (I went there!), harborfields, and three village are all good... does anyone have other recommendations? If they have special programs for gifted children (like HHH), that would be a plus in my book
TIA!!!!!!

We went with Three Village. How far are you willing to go from Stony Brook? We also loved Northport, but the commute was a bit further than I wanted to do to Stony Brook. I wanted to stay under 1/2 hour since I will be doing the primary taking care of baby.

Re: possibly entering the real estate market soon... suffolk school district question
well, we ideally would be in the northport/commack/ dix hills area... to about plainview.... But we're hoping to get a starter home, so a good portion of northport (the village) and dix hills is too $$$ for us. We were thinking about kings park, east northport, commack.... We're fine with a 45 min commute. Mom lives in dix hills and takes care of DS during the day, so it paradoxically would be LESS driving if we moved from port jeff to points west... despite us working in stony brook.

I don't think we can afford much in that district (otherwise we would have checked out your open house yesterday )
thanks, I'll definitely check out that website!

What about S. Huntington District #13. I am in this district (Don't have children yet), but I heard wonderful things about the district.

well, let me know if you see a house in the SD that you like, I will certainly advise you about the neighborhood. There are a lot of great deals out there.

An easier commute to the city...I decided to live closer to the lie. Schools I would consider, Connetquot, Sachem, Happauge....All good, have plenty of activities, sports and are the average schools, and the taxes are as high as Three village

yeah, that is exactly our thought too... Except we added to our list east northport and kings park becuase they're right by Sunken meadow pkwy...
I've been noticing the outrageous taxes for commack and smithtown too.... all I have to say is
I just discovered the Hauppauge district... and added hauppauge to our list. (actually, there's a VERY nice modern home available now, but we still have a few more months of money juggling before our downpayment is set.... it likely will be gone by the time we can make an offer )
I will also look into the other districts everyone has mentioned.... thanks so much everyone!!!!

We're in the Smithtown district. We're in a small house, though, so ou taxes aren't that bad.

yeah, DH and I need at least a 3 BR 2 bath / mid-sized home... The things I see on MSLI right now in smithtown that are the proper size all have taxes over $10k
I love that area though

Re: possibly entering the real estate market soon... suffolk school district question
we live in east northport, but the northport/east northport schools...taxes are much cheaper compared to east northport commack or elwood schools.
we live off of pulaski which is a 4 min drive to sunken meadow pkwy, or you can take elwood rd down to deer park ave and hop on the northern pkwy...
we love it here, easy walk to the parks/stores/libary, etc...

I'm sure you know this, but just watch with Hauppauge that it is really in the Hauppauge district. Some of the homes in Hauppauge fall into Central Islip district. Some of the more afforable ones there are also on very busy roads, but that's the case everywhere!
