Post all about your first day here!
I figure we'll all need a good laugh after a long day today!
So when you get home, tell us what happened today!

Re: Post all about your first day here!
Mine was very long (lunch at 12:30 - prep today at 1:20). Hopefully I got through to them as I talked their ears off all morning about our class as a community.
I thought it was odd though that some kids had no idea if they were promoted from summer school or not. I did have one student who came in w/no supplies at all...
My school is very weird!

Re: Post all about your first day here!
im a speech therapist, so for me its a little different...
we're supposed to have 39 sessions a week. supposed to have 6- 45 minute preps a week. usually speech kids are seen in groups of 3. many times, the kids are from different classes, and grades. very often, in each group of kids, they dont all have the same goals.
at this point, we're grouping kids into boxes. the prep schedules change constantly, so where you were able to pull a group out at say, 930 on a monday, now you cant because they dont have art anymore, instead they have science. this will probably happen 10 more times.
then, we have to meet up with the other service providers in the building: 4 speech, 5 OTs, 3 PTs, ESL, Hearing, Couseling, and Guidance Counselor sessions cannot overlap. Plus, dont forget, nobody wants to be taken out of gym, or computer, or art...cant take the kids out of math or reading or science, if theyre in the 4th grade...
oh wait, we got another prep schedule

I had some chatty kids. Some were definitely testng me. There were lots of scheduling problems but I'm sure they will be fixed soon. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow's heat!

Re: Post all about your first day here!
We started last week- but my best was when one of my 5th grade boys raised his hand as we were brainstorming class promises/rule....
"We could have a rule that there be no farting in class..." and I jokingly said, "Yeah, and maybe no picking your nose, too?"
Thay all very seriously agreed........Think I should put that on our rules poster?

Re: Post all about your first day here!
My day was pretty smooth for the most part. A few minor bumps with kids testing me but overall it was heaven compared to last year in Harlem!
So far so good, I am happy...but ask me again next week

Mine was pretty good. There are a few kids with some schedule problems and it was really hot. But otherwise it went well.

Re: Post all about your first day here!
I'd have been much happier with mine if my feet didn't KILL right now. But I have VERY cute 10th graders, an interesting (and weirdly annoying) mix in journalism, one quiet and one chatty AP class, and a group of eight senior boys who are considered high risk, and half of them need to retake the regents. Oh, and I have an overload -- a class of 23 seniors... Yeah. I can't wait for November when I lose them (even though I REALLY love some of them). It'll be nice to be off at the end of the day...

very tough day- have a child w/autism in my class and one not classified but "spectrumy" as they call it... He had a rough day adjusting and a few meltdowns. I was overwhelmed, hot, tired, frustrated and sad.... Day one down... 181? to go...
are these children receiving services, like resource room at the very least? you should also ask your special ed. provider or lead teacher for help and tips for when these kids are in your room. i work with these type of kids, so let me know if you need any advice.

Re: Post all about your first day here!
My day was good, but my kids are SOOO low functioning. it's too be expected as I always get the lowest kids (it's a self-contained with some push-in class) but soo much lower than my group from the past 2 years. i am really going to have to change how i've been doing things to meet their needs.

Re: Post all about your first day here!
Commute there was great .
Sadly, two out of three new students had a difficult time adjusting.
At many points throughout the day time seem to be at a standstill.

Re: Post all about your first day here!
I teach kindergarten, and I always forget that the first day is like a trip to the zoo, lol! I even had a "runner" this morning, and had to keep my door closed. He just "felt like going home" when he walked out after snack! I am DEFINITELY counting down!!

Re: Post all about your first day here!
today was rough- not used to teaching all day being pg.
1/2 my class comes from a teacher last year that was actually fired- she had NO classroom management and these kids are used to talking whenever they want, sharpening pencils when they are already pointed, not doing any work- I have my work cut out for me but I WILL BREAK THEM!!
Mwahahahaha
