Re: Post pics of my backyard
I would love to have your backyard. So much potential. and you have grass (sorry I don't have grass right now, so I have grass envy ) But seriously, you have a great backyard. OK, that one scary shed needs to be taken done and the other one it looks like you can just paint it and it would look brand new. For now on the deck, go out and by inexpensive planters from Target or Walmart or even check out Big Lots. And put bright colored flowers in them. Put them in a couple of the corners. You can even buy some tropical plants for the corners of the deck for some height. You can buy the planters that hang off of the deck also. You can really add a lot of color this way. Than the rest of the yard just needs new bushes and flowers if you want. But really you yard is very nice. GL!

Thank you. I think the outside really overwhelms me. We have to take down that shed, and clean out the area that is around it. Eventually I would a new deck but for now it is what it is. Thanks for the tips I am thinking I will take you up on those =). It's crab grass too lol dont be jealous lol

Look it's a really large lot you have and it has a lot of potential. What I would do (and I have lots of them) is make a list of what you want to change and what needs to be changed. Take on one project at a time or by the season if you have to. I would take the shed down first, than paint that other shed and it looks like you might need to restain the deck. Those are the easy things to do first and I'm sure the yard will look different just with that done. And mulch makes a flower bed look so much nicer, even if there is nothing in it. It just makes for cleaner looking lines in the yard and it shows you where the grass ends the the flower bed begins. You can fill up the flower bed with shrubs and flowers when you have the time and/or money. Please our backyard has been a work in progress for 2 years now and it's still not the way I want it at all.
You can also power wash the retaining wall and it will look newer as you take a layer or two off. Than you could buy thin long planters and put them on top of the retaining wall. Instant pretty in the yard.

Re: Post pics of my backyard
DUDE!! YOU ARE CRAZY!!
Can we switch yards? I will give you all the plants and shrubs I bought this year, to have that size lot. Seriously!!
You see problems, I see potential. Go look at Jen's album and what she did with her small shed. It looks amazing now! Unless it's not structurally sound, you could re-roof it so easily and put up some vinyl siding. It could be a potting shed!
You already have natural lines in the yard that I have to create. I'm envisioning a path up to the raised area with some kind of additional seating, like a bistro set. Something that you can see a little bit from below that makes you want to go check it out.
Succulents, phlox, etc on that curved area above the retaining wall, to help with water runoff. Nice flowering shrubs like hydrangea, forsythia, etc in front of the wall.
Geez woman. Let us help you see the potential! It will be great!!

Thanks Greenfreak! You came up with some other great ideas. Love the bistro idea. This yard will be something you love, over time. Be patient and you will have your own little oasis when you are done.

Re: Post pics of my backyard
Thank you both for giving me tips. I am all about taking you up on them =). Under the shed we are taking down is a concrete slab. I want to put a gazebo there with a fire pit. Or just the fire pit w chairs and such.
Greenfreak I love your idea about the upper portion of the yard. I am going to do that one day for sure. My husband wants to put steps up the slope to the upper portion.
The retaining wall may need to be replaced.
Believe it or not I recently painted the trim of that one shed and restained the deck. The problem is the deck was never stained correctly and it's very old.
I am sure w some plants, mulch, time and patience it will come to be a nice place.
Thanks for the words of encouragement =).

You are welcome!
For the deck you can always use a stain that is more of a paint. Check out Lowe's, Home Depot or Ace Hardware for this. They even have sample chips and sample stain cans. This way it looks like a new deck until you can replace it.

Re: Post pics of my backyard
By the way, the shrubs closest to the house look like rhododendron. How long have you been in your house? You can prune those after they flower in spring. I pruned my parent's shrub last year and it looks so much better this year!

They are... and I believe they have been there for as long as I can remember. This home was the one I grew up in that we bought from my mom. How far back can I prune?

Thanks again. I am going to look into this idea. I stained it this year, like I've done the last 3 and for whatever reason it came out two different colors So maybe I will try that next. Thanks
