Posted on TTC...but might be more relevant here

Hi everyone...

I've kind of lurked here, but think it's time to move over from TTC.

I have been off BCP since 10/05 and we've been actively trying since 5/06. Finally last month went to the doctor to begin testing. Turns out all my stuff is fine (I always knew I was okay - just had a feeling) but turns out DH's semen analysis came back on the very low side...I don't remember what for exactly but something that should have been 50% or higher was only 8%.
The doctor is referring him to a urologist...does anyone know what comes next?

The doc said we may have to consider artificial insemination or IVF.

I think it would depend on the results of your DH semen tests. I would think that if he has problems the RE would advise you to go to IVF as opposed to insemination.

Good luck & welcome, I hope your stay here is a short one!

As Cathie said...a lot has to do with the results of your husband's tests. Most of the time, however, IUI or Artificial Insemination is not the answer with semen problems. IVF is usually the way to go because they can fertilize each egg if necessary.

Good luck and hope you have answers soon!!!!

We have MF issues also and just did IVF w/ICSI. I agree with Gerty....for male issues it's usually advised to go straight to IVF. Our RE advised against IUI's because of the extremely low success rate for our issue. Your DH should definitely see a urologist and one that specializes in male IF. FM me if you want some referals (all in Manhattan where I live). Also, from my understanding you should not go on just one semen analysis alone so your DH should really have another semen analysis done.

I'm assuming you have motility issues because of the 50% comment you made. I heard caffeine is good for motility....DH's SA sucked in all aspects except the motility and he's a big red bull drinker which has a lot of caffeine in it. Your DH should also look into taking a multivitamin. Good Luck!
