Posting on behalf of my SIL....In Search of a Teaching Job...
She will be completing her student teaching in 3 weeks, and will be certified to work the 07-08 school year.
She is in search of a job, preferably on Long Island. She will be certified to teach thru 2nd grade.
Anyone aware of any openings??
Or any suggestions on where to look? She has no "connections" and is desperate.
TIA!!!

Does she have anything else - like a bilingual or special ed extension? Honestly, she is going to have a very, very tough time getting a position. LI is totally overrun with elementary certified people.

She might want to try the city...get some experience and then go back...BUT I have also heard of many people getting jobs right out of college which really annoys me (no offense to your SIL) but IMO you need to pay your dues first....I have been looking for a LI job for 4 years

I agree she has to try other places (the city, Catholic school) to "get her foot in the door". I have also heard of VERY lucky people getting jobs out of college (have NO IDEA how they do it and it annoys me and baffles me a bit as well, not to be mean) I've been working everywhere since I graduated college in 2002..mommy and me teacher, worked in CW Post Day care, lasted a week, and was a UPK teacher. I now teach in a Catholic school. My point is it's not easy when you're not "Conected". We need lots of luck and

Being that she is only certified up to 2nd grade, she is likely going to have an EXTREMLY diffiicult time finding a job - that is a very narrow certification range. She should consider going back for another certification. Best of luck to her!

Not that I know of, I do know she is bi-lingual, but not sure if she has any certification.
THank you all, I (not being in the field) do not know more that what I have posted, but will let her know your suggestions!

only through 2nd grade??? what certification is that? she will definitely have to get a masters.
tell her to try the city or catholic schools...it's very rare to get an elementary teaching job right out of college on LI unless your dad is the superintendent

I believe when they revamped the teaching requirements in 2004, they split elementary into different pieces (I think this is the breakdown) -
Early Childhood Education = Birth - 2nd grade
Elementary = 3 - 5
Middle Childhood = Grades 5 - 9
