Potty training help for older toddlers
So Ryan HATES the potty. He wants NOTHING to do with it.
I have bought the seat and the actualy potty, he screams if I sit him on it. I have tried rewards, he doesn't care. I have tried the underwear, again, he doesn't care.
I know he is physically ready, as he tells us when he going to go, and when he is going, but he is just so resistant.
He is 3 and a half now, so I am getting concerned. Am I missing any tricks or tips to entice him about the potty? The only thing that I can think of is to buy a DVD about potty training with a cartoon or something to show him it's fun.

Re: Potty training help for older toddlers
I did a reward/sticker chart with Jared and left him in underware in the summer. When he wet himself, I'd leave him in it for a while so he felt how uncomfortable it is. Eventually, he got it.

Re: Potty training help for older toddlers
My Dr told me when they are ready it will take days to train. When they arent it takes relentless months. I am starting to notice a HUGE difference in my dd. She LOVES underwear and the characters etc... So Ive been playing up the underwear idea.

My son is just like this. Nothing could get him on the potty. He's three and a quarter now. We just bought a sticker chart last week from BRU and he's actually going on the potty a t least once per day now. Today he actually went by himself without telling me. Try stickers!

LOL - I did this with my daughter too - she eventually got the hit that its wasn't nice sitting in a wet panty. It worked though.

Re: Potty training help for older toddlers
this was my ds! he wasn't fully potty trained til he was 3 1/2 almost 4, i tried every! He would go pee on the potty, but not #2. Then, after he started having #2 accidents daily, i had HIM rinse out and help me clean the gross poppy underwear...he didn't like that much and soon enough no more accidents. It sounds harsh, but it worked for us

Re: Potty training help for older toddlers
Like you, we tried everything - rewards, reverse psychology, getting to wear the cool underwear, etc - nothing worked. He physically could do it but didn't want to do it. We tried the underwear thing (he didn't care that he was wet and there were puddles in his shoes). It was very stressful on everyone so we decided we would let him decide when he was ready. We'd ask him a couple times per day if he wanted to use the potty and if not, we told him it was okay, maybe later (didn't make a big deal out of it). One morning he woke up, said he wanted to use the potty and he's been using it ever since. It was amazing - he was instantly potty trained day and night, naptime too - no wet beds, no accidents. We went on a six hour car trip and stopped once and still no accidents. I guess it just had to be his decision. He was almost 3 1/2 when this occurred.
Just keep trying different approaches - something will work! Every child is different.

Re: Potty training help for older toddlers
I recommend the DVD Potty Power. It worked for both my kids. DS I had trouble with and I bought Potty Power because somebody had posted it on here and it worked! I showed it to DD for the first time 3 weeks ago and she's fully trained...she was trained within a few days (she had ZERO interest prior to watching)

Re: Potty training help for older toddlers
I just potty trained my daughter last month- she is 3 1/2. I kept her home from daycare for a whole week and concentrated on potty training her. 1st day- we sat on that potty every 15 mins. She peed once in it and the rest on the floor. The ony time she did potty i made a big fuss over it. Day 2- same banana but this time we had 3 successful potty tries and the rest on the floor. Day 3 we only had 1 accident and the rest in the potty. I basically made her sit on it often. We sat right in front of the TV.
Sofia was also resistant on Day 1 but i told her to just try. Oh yeah we have 3 different potty videos (Potty Power was the best one) We watched that over and over again.

It might have been me that mentioned it...I LOVED this video. I would take the little potty and put it in front of the tv. My daughter was allowed to watch the video as often as she would like BUT she had to be sitting on the potty while watching.
In two days she was without diapers.

Re: Potty training help for older toddlers
Thank you everyone for the great suggestions.
What is especially hard is that DD, who is almost 2, sees her brother saying NO when I ask him if he wants to use the potty, and now she does the same. She sees him carry on when I have tried the couple of times to sit him on it, and she does the same.
She is ready just like him, so it looks like I have 2 to potty train at the same time! Ahh!
