POTUS/VP spouses 2016 vs. 2020
It's been less than two weeks, and SG has already announced his initiative and gone out on his first visit. FLOTUS has also announced what she will be working on and has been vocal about her cause.
i honestly don't know if I don't remember this from 2016 or if I just ignored it because of my dislike of the winners. Did Pence's wife do anything during their time in office? I know Melania announced her campaign like a year after the inauguration but i'm still not sure what she did about it.
Can someone educate me?

Karen Pence became the second lady of the United States on January 20, 2017, succeeding Jill Biden. As second lady, Pence worked to raise awareness of art therapy, to which she was first exposed when visiting a Washington hospital during her husband's tenure as a congressman. In October 2017, she visited the campus of Florida State University to highlight the university's art therapy program, which dates back to the 1990s.
Pence is a honey bee conservation advocate. While first lady of Indiana, she had a beehive installed at the Indiana Governor's Residence. She continued to raise awareness of honey bee habitat destruction and the importance of pollination in 2017 by having a beehive installed at the official vice presidential residence, Number One Observatory Circle.

(CNN) — Second lady Karen Pence has a message and a mission: Art therapy is not just arts and crafts.
“From children with cancer to struggling teens to grieving families to people with autism to military service members experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder, to those with eating disorders,” Pence said Wednesday. “Art therapy is changing lives and it is saving lives.” ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_Best
Melania Trump made the initiative and came up with the name "Be Best". Trump said she was willing to face any criticism. She formally introduced the campaign on May 7, 2018. Following her speech in the White House Rose Garden, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation declaring May 7 "Be Best" day. Unlike policy initiatives by previous first ladies (such as Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign against childhood obesity, or Nancy Reagan's Just Say No to drugs campaign), Be Best is broad in scope. The initiative focuses on physical and emotional well-being, and also advocates against cyberbullying and opioid abuse. ...

Do they have to have an initiative/project? I'm thinking like- what if the first/second person has a really busy career of their own? Are they expected to give that up while their spouse is in the WH? I'm genuinely curious but I don't know how that works.

Pretty sure I read Kamala Harris husband stepped away from his job to serve as Second Man or whatever he is now called. But now I think Biden's wife is still working.

POTUS/VP spouses 2016 vs. 2020
Dr. Biden continued to teach community college while she was the second lady, and said she will continue to teach as FLOTUS.
Michelle Obama had a great career - she met her husband while they were working at the same law firm but she stopped working to support her husband.

I was just wondering if it was expected or required of them to stop working in their "day job" lol when their spouse takes office and what the actual protocol was.

The second gentleman is teaching classes at Georgetown law school. He stopped being a partner at his law firm. I think he said he wants to work on education, and access to legal services for the poor and for children.

historically, these two roles have been filled by non-working women. it was expected of them to take on a role as first and second ladies.
i want to say that hilary was the first to start pushing back on those mores. dr biden has gotten a lot of heat from the beginning because she made it clear she would not stop teaching. it was expected that she would not work "outside of the home." remember she even got heat for keeping the Dr. in her name. people are such idiots.

That's what I was curious about. It seems it was an antiquated thing from the days where women existed solely to support their men's careers. It's refreshing to hear that times are changing and that the first lady and second gentleman can have the best of both worlds.

Remember, Hillary was practically burned at the stake for saying "I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas."
I don't care if you like her or her politics, but damn, that made me love Hill.
