Powerwashing - is this normal???

OK so we finally hired a guy to powerwash and stain our pressure treated pine deck.

Of all the people that came to give us estimates this guy was the most expensive but was going to brush on the stain (not spray) and we felt that would give us the best results. He seemed to be the most experienced but not we are having serious doubts...

He washed the deck yesterday and although it appears cleaner i expected better. The wood grain seems very raised and almost FUZZY & and it very splintery. I can not run my hand across the top rails without getting splinters.

Is the splintery/fuzzy part normal until the stain/sealer is applied or did this guy wash the deck too hard and hurt the wood?

Please help!

THANKS!

When did he say he was coming back to stain? The wood might not be 100% dry yet. I never got this done (I actually hired someone myself and he is starting next week), but I have seen it done before.

eys...the wood will look rough and splintery because its still wet. once it dries and you get a stain/sealer on it, it will be fine

Re: Powerwashing - is this normal???

it's def. better to brush the stain on - soaks it in better and coats all over.

it's def possible to powerwash too close to the wood and make it splinter, but you would probably see more damage if that had happened. Once the stain is on the fuzziness should be gone and it will look great!

Re: Powerwashing - is this normal???

My FIL does this each and every year to their deck and have never had that as a result. The grain fuzziness is normal to a point but the splinters should not be happening. I think hes stripping too much wood off.

Never had that problem...prob cause the wood is untreated..once it is stained and sets should be better. GL!Chat Icon
