Pre-K homework help needed ! -UPDATE

DS comes home w/ his first hw assignment and already I'm lost Chat Icon (sorry long)

What would you say the correct answers would be ( DH and I can't agree)

DS is doing the Letter "A"

His h/w states to color the objects that

BEGIN WITH or HAVE THE SHORT SOUND like "apple"...

These are the choices:

pig
astronaut
pan
hand
ant
bag

I assist DS with it - he tells me only astranaut and ant ( he's 4)...I explain to him that there is a short "a" sound in pan hand and bag also...He is adament that I am wrong, but colors them anyhow....

I look in his backpack and see WHY he was arguing w/ me - He did the same ditto in school and teacher only had them color the astronaut and ant Chat Icon ....and the teacher wrote in pencil a "p" for pig, "h" for hand and so on Chat Icon

Had the H/W stated specifically "starts w/ the short "a", I would agree, but thats not what it says...

DH agrees with the teacher Chat Icon

Opinions here ???? Feel free to tell me if I'm wrong and why - LOL !!!

( yes this is super silly, and I think this H/W is a little advanced for a child who turned 4 just a week ago actually!)

UPDATE 10/23-

So when I took DS to school this morning, I said to the teacher ( who I am very friendly with)

Ummm Miss.L- I have some questions about the h.....

She interrupted me mid sentence and said HOMEWORK- yes, I know Miss So and So ( a classmate of Brandons' mom who is a Kinderagarten teacher) also brought the misleading directions to the teachers attention...

Apparently, the assistant made the copies before the teacher had a chance to change the instructions, thus the confusion....I did tell her that my DS apparently does pay attention though because HE knew precisely what she was looking for
Chat Icon

So end result- Mommy ( and LIF) gets an A+ in reading comprehension and DS gets an A+ in listening comprehension...Chat Icon

Teacher and my DH get an F Chat Icon

I'm a K teacher and I thought the same as you because of the statement explaining that it should either BEGIN with or HAVE the short sound. Then I realized that all of the pictures would have to be colored then. I think that's what would make me think the teacher meant to only color the ones that start with the sound.

ETS I didn't notice the word pig. Chat Icon

I think my son had a similar worksheet last night for HW!!!

I think you are right, but maybe it is only the beginning a sound?? I forget what we did, I can see if I can find that page... Does it say Practice with a number in a circle at top? What number?

Re: Pre-K homework help needed ! Opinions (teachers too come in !)- LOL

I'm a second grade special ed teacher and I would think that she wrote the wrong directions on it. I would be very surprised if she expected 4 year olds to identify short vowel sounds in words...some of my 2nd graders can't do that! I would write a little note on the post-it asking her to clarify the directions on it...it could totally be a mistake on her part, or maybe she really is looking for short vowel identification already, but if she is, I wouldn't think that words with the -an sound are good examples since the n changes the sound of the short a...

Its actually one of those pre-printed ditto type pages ( like out of a work-book)

This seems too complex for their age group...
It seems like it should have been more of a "which picture begins with the letter "A" as opposed to "has the short sound of the letter A"

HW in preschool?! What is this world coming to?! Chat Icon

I agree with what you thought. I think the directions are just messed up, though. (I teach 1st grade)

I think that is a ridiculous homework assignment for pre-k (as a teacher and parent) As a SEIT I have been in at least 10 different pre-k classrooms and I have never seen something so advanced and frankly, mundane, being given to four year olds. I am sorry to interject here, but really.

The directions aren't clear. Either she pulled the sheet that isn't for that age group and she used it to serve her purposes or she worded her own directions wrong. 4 year olds can't be expected to know the "short a" sound in the middle of the word.
I would write a note on the homework telling her that you did according to the directions and didn't see his classwork first or you would have followed suit. I think it's an honest mistake.

"BEGIN WITH or HAVE THE SHORT SOUND like "apple"..."

Every word except "pig" should be colored in. I would try to explain to your son, and write a note to the teacher.

And yeah, I kind of agree that for someone who just turned 4 that's pretty advanced. I don't even know if we did that kind of phonics in Kindergarten!

i think this is what happened. she probably used a sheet from a more advanced phonics book, and forgot to change the directions on it.... she probably meant to cross out the part that says "or have the short "a" sound in them".... i have 7 year old that can barely tell the middle vowel sound of a word!

Re: Pre-K homework help needed ! Opinions (teachers too come in !)- LOL

Stace, as you know I teach Pk & we first off do give HW, but 2 sheets given out on Mon & they are due Thurs/Fri. One is always a tracing assignment of the letter that we are covering & the other is a color, cut & paste letter sheet.

That sheet is way too advanced for PK. Most of my kids are having a hard time just learning the sound a letter makes ("B makes the buh sound").

I'd definitely call the teacher out; either jot a note or ask her when you drop him off.

Thank you to everyone !

At least I know I don't have comprehension issues myself Chat Icon

A more suiting homework assignment would have been to color the pictures (or the words) that begin with the LETTER A, not the short sound of it...

My DH was like " well I know what she meant" and my thing was that it should have reflected that, and that I was following the instructions- What do I know, if she's introducing short sounds or not ( age appropriate or not)

Thanks again everyone- I will update

Re: Pre-K homework help needed ! -UPDATE

DS also had a similar assignment this week practicing short a sounds.

I also think it's a bit much for pre-K kids to have homework. DS comes home with something almost every night and on the weekends. I think it's great that they are giving them stuff to reinforce what they teach during the day, but every day is excessive IMO.
